Position OverviewThe Band Director is the primary artistic, educational, and spiritual leader of the Westbury Christian School instrumental music program. This educator will oversee the developmental progression of approximately 80 band students spanning 5th through 12th grade. The ideal candidate will cultivate a rigorous, inspiring, and Christ-centered musical environment where students develop their God-given talents, pursue academic and artistic Truth, and learn to collaborate as a unified ensemble.
Key Responsibilities 1. Instructional Leadership & Music EducationSequential Program Delivery: Conduct and manage a four-tier daily instructional schedule, ensuring developmental continuity across all levels:
5th Grade Beginning Band: Introduce fundamental music notation, instrument care, embouchure, and ensemble basics.
6th Grade Beginning/Intermediate Band: Reinforce foundational skills while introducing more complex rhythms and section independence.
Middle School Band: Deepen musical expression, technique, and repertoire preparation for early adolescents.
High School Band: Lead the premier instrumental ensemble, focusing on advanced repertoire, mature musicianship, and collegiate/audition preparation.
Curriculum & Pedagogy: Design and execute an instrumental curriculum that balances individual technical mastery with cohesive ensemble performance.
Faith Integration: Intentionally integrate Christian faith and worship into the study of music, teaching students to view artistic excellence as a reflection of the Creator.
Concert Production: Plan, rehearse, and direct high-quality, public performances at the end of the Fall and Spring semesters for all grade-level bands.
TAPPS Competition: Prepare and enter high school students into the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) state contests, including Solo & Ensemble and Large Ensemble evaluations, aiming for institutional excellence.
Athletic & Community Engagement: Direct the Pep Band to perform at all home football games to foster school spirit and community engagement. (Note: The program is currently a non-marching pep band).
Inventory & Asset Management: Maintain, organize, and inventory all school-owned instruments, sheet music library, uniforms, and equipment.
Budgetary Discretion: Manage the band department budget with resourcefulness and fiscal responsibility, prioritizing necessary repairs, music acquisition, and contest fees.
Safety & Supervision: Ensure appropriate student supervision during rehearsals, concerts, athletic events, and off-campus trips.
Relational Partnership: Foster clear, proactive, and trusting communication with parents regarding student progress, performance schedules, and fees.
Professional Boundaries: Maintain exemplary professional boundaries with students, parents, and colleagues, ensuring all communication remains formal and avoiding informal social media engagement.
Kingdom Diversity: Encourage and celebrate a diverse student body, creating an inclusive band culture where students of all backgrounds and skill levels feel a profound sense of belonging.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a closely related field (required).
Experience:
Proven success as a band director or music educator, preferably spanning both foundational levels and high school competitive ensembles.
Experience with TAPPS or similar competitive circuits is highly preferred.
Spiritual Commitment:
Affirms and supports the school's Statement of Christian Faith and Guiding Biblical Principles.
Active member in good standing of a local Christian congregation.
Skills & Attributes:
Proficient conducting technique and strong pedagogical knowledge of brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.
High emotional intelligence, exceptional organizational skills, and a growth mindset.
Commitment to humility, resilience, and collaborative teamwork within the broader Fine Arts department.
Ability to move heavy instruments, percussion equipment, or chairs (up to 40 lbs) occasionally.
Ability to stand for long periods during rehearsals, pep games, and concerts.
Clear verbal communication and the ability to operate in high-activity, high-noise environments.
