Applicants claiming Indian Preference must submit verification of Indian heritage certified by a federally recognized tribe at the time of application.Position SummaryThe Dental Assistant (DA) is a key member of the Native American Health Center's Dental Department and provides chairside assisting and clinical support in a multidisciplinary healthcare setting. The Dental Assistant works in both General and Pediatric Dental Clinics and performs all duties in compliance with the California Dental Practice Act, infection prevention standards, and HIPAA regulations.This position may require occasional Saturday work based on operational needs and direction from clinic leadership.The Native American Health Center is an accredited organization and adheres to the standards established by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Duties:
Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Care and Chairside Assisting• Assist in the delivery of high-quality dental care within the authorized scope of practice and accepted professional standards.• Perform four-handed chairside assisting techniques in coordination with dental providers to improve efficiency, ergonomics, and patient outcomes.• Prepare dental operatories for patient care while maintaining aseptic conditions and infection control protocols.• Prepare instruments, trays, materials, and equipment for all dental procedures.• Review patient charts prior to appointments to ensure proper setup for treatment.• Capture diagnostic-quality digital radiographs and document them accurately in the Electronic Dental Record (EDR).• Obtain and record patient vital signs as appropriate to treatment.• Apply topical anesthetics under the direction of the dentist.• Obtain preliminary impressions for diagnostic and study models.Patient Care and Customer Service• Greet patients and families in a professional and courteous manner.• Demonstrate a calm and respectful chairside manner with patients of all ages and abilities.• Provide oral hygiene instructions to patients and caregivers.• Review and explain pre- and post-operative instructions.• Ensure completion of consent forms and required documentation.• Support smooth patient flow and assist other dental staff as needed.Sterilization, Supplies, and Lab Case Management• Perform sterilization and equipment maintenance according to policy.• Maintain clean, organized, and stocked work areas.• Notify the Dental Assistant Supervisor of supply needs.• Manage prosthetic lab cases and maintain accurate tracking logs.Specialized and Outreach Duties• Oakland only: Assist Orthodontist with ligature removal and replacement under supervision.• Participate in off-site dental services such as mobile clinics.• Provide translation services when needed.Safety, Compliance, and Quality Improvement• Follow all patient and employee safety protocols.• Use proper ergonomic practices and PPE.• Participate in quality improvement initiatives.• Maintain confidentiality of Protected Health Information in compliance with HIPAA.Additional Duties• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS1. A high school diploma or its equivalent is required.2. Must have DA Certification and prior experience working as a Dental Assistant is required, preferably with a minimum of 2 years.3. Must possess a dental radiation safety license and have experience with digital x-ray technology.4. BLS/CPR certification must be obtained prior to start date and kept current at all times.5. Prior experience working with and EDR system is a plus, specifically with, Dentrix.6. Knowledge of the Bay Area Native American community with a commitment to serving Native Americans and other vulnerable member populations is required.7. Must be able to handle day to day challenges, confidently; be willing and able to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities, demonstrate flexibility.8. Must be a self-starter, proactive, have high integrity and high attention to detail.9. Must work well independently and as a part of a team.10. Fluency in Spanish, including both written and verbal, is preferred. Work Type:
