As Medical Coding Specialist, you'll be the unsung hero behind the scenes, turning complex medical information into a symphony of perfectly coded data.

DOH Sarasota requires a Medical Coder/Referral specialist to ensure accurate, timely coding for clinical services such as family planning, obstetric care, STI care, and HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C treatment. The coder will also be responsible for referral tracking. Proper coding is essential for compliant reporting, reimbursement, and data accuracy. A dedicated coder improves documentation quality, supports audits, maintains regulatory compliance, and protects the department's financial and data integrity. This role sustains efficient operations and accurate public health reporting. Join the Florida Department of Health and make a meaningful impact within our Specialty Clinic. The job is a full time, in-office position, 40 hours per week and dependent on the successful completion of trainings within 60 days of employment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Strong ability to interpret clinical documentation and assign correct codes.
• Understanding of public health clinic workflows
• Attention to detail with a focus on accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
• Strong communication skills and comfort working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to shifting public health program needs.
• Ability to track multiple referrals and manage follow-ups efficiently.

Qualifications:

• Minimum – Valid driver's license
• Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS systems and standard outpatient coding guidelines.
• Preferred – Medical coding experience
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or equivalent qualification
• Experience with electronic health records and familiarity with Florida DOH clinical systems
