Position Summary: Open from 06/30/2026 through 11:59 p.m. 7/31/2026. All applications must be received prior to the closing. This is an essential services position that is eligible for overtime when preapproved by the supervisor. This is a covered position under the Colorado Partnership for Quality Jobs & Services Act. Minimum Qualifications: Current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification. To be eligible for appointment as a peace officer, an applicant must first be certified by the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board. By law, a person must pass a certification examination administered by the POST Board, a physical and psychological examination, and a background check before he or she may serve as a peace officer in Colorado. One (1) year of experience in a law enforcement position.

Conditions of Employment: In addition to the requirements listed above, this position is an essential services position and must be able to work ALL shifts and in the case of emergencies, or inclement weather and in the case of covering a last-minute shift for another officer. Basic current valid Colorado P.O.S.T. certification is required at the time of hire. A final job offer is contingent upon the satisfactory review of the driving record by the College insurance agent following the Authorized Driver Policy of Fort Lewis College and the satisfactory driving record must be maintained throughout employment in order to drive a campus vehicle. Positions are subject to a background investigation in accordance with the administrative procedures of the State Personnel Director. Physical and psychological evaluations are required in accordance with section 24-31-303 (5) (b), C. R. S. Must possess and maintain a current valid driver license and must be in possession of the license by the testing date. A final job offer is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a post offer evaluation of fitness for duty. This fitness test has cardio and strength components that must be passed. All candidates are encouraged to ensure they will be able to meet those requirements by actively conditioning now.

Job Duties Patrol 40 % Conducts motor, bicycle, and foot patrol in order to deter and discover criminal activity, documenting all incidents including criminal activity, safety and health hazards, unusual or suspicious activities, security problems and deficiencies, take immediate action when required on all of the above. Criminal Investigation 20% Processes crime scenes, collects and preserves evidence, photographs and diagrams crime scenes, interviews victims, witnesses and suspects. Executes search and arrest warrants. Assists other law enforcement agencies. Proactively enforces drug and alcohol laws and policies, enforces all federal state and local laws and ordinances. Also enforces the rules and regulations of Fort Lewis College. Community Relations/Policing 10% Assists students, faculty, staff and visitors with directions to various buildings, special functions, etc. Advises students in crime prevention and personal safety. Assists with motor vehicle problems such as unlocking doors, jumpstarting vehicles, assisting with flat tires, calling towing companies, locksmiths, etc. Advises students on problems not directly involving law enforcement. Documentation & Report Writing 20% File appropriate police reports, affidavits, search & arrest warrants as appropriate. Ensure compliance with state law (SB217) regarding body camera recording and preservation. Complete daily activity log to document shift events and ensure communication with other departments on campus. Complete all contact information as required by SB 217. Communicate via email, phone, text, etc. to supervisors and other members of the department to ensure tasks are being completed appropriately. Traffic 5% Directs traffic before and after special events. Enforce traffic and parking regulations and issues parking tickets for violations. Investigates traffic accidents including administering first aid when necessary. Photographs and diagrams accident scenes. Issues summons as required. Prepares reports and testifies in court. Training & Certification 5% Attends training sessions to keep state certifications current. Monitors own training file to ensure compliance and training requirements per CRS 24-31-315
