Clinical Nurse Specialist - Pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT

Job Function Summary:

Involves advanced expertise in evidence-based nursing and practice in a range of specialty areas, such as oncology, pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatric / mental health, adult health, acute / critical care, among others. Provides direct patient care, teaching, mentoring, consulting, research, management, and systems improvement. Influences outcomes by providing expert consultation to all care providers and implementing improvements in health care delivery systems.

Technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues / problems without precedent and / or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.

Custom Scope

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse who serves as an oncology and BMT nursing clinical expert, leader, consultant, educator, and mentor for the nursing staff and teams at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital (BCH). The specialized knowledge and skills required for this role include clinical expertise in oncology and stem cell transplant nursing; design and implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP), education and mentorship, consultation, performance improvement, and leadership. The Hematology/Oncology/BMT CNS role has three spheres of impact across the health system that include the patient/family, nursing/interprofessional teams, and the organization/health system. This role works collaboratively with the unit's clinical leaders, the BCH CNS group, the Pediatric Nursing Professional Development Specialists, and hospital leadership to support and ensure high quality standards of nursing care and professional practice to optimize patient, team, and system outcomes.

Department Overview

C6 is a Pediatric Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant unit located on the 6th floor of the Benioff Children's Hospital in San Francisco The overall unit is divided into 2 smaller units, a 24 bed Heme/Onc unit and a 13 bed Bone Marrow Transplant unit. C6 specializes in the treatment of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and, Bone Marrow Transplant patients as well as in the care of several Pediatric Surgical sub specialties such as ENT and Urology. C6 provides patients with a myriad of treatment modalities such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, Bone Marrow Transplant, and pain and palliative care. The patient acuity ranges from high to moderate with 4:1, 3:1, and 2:1 RN to patient ratios.

  • Consults and collaborates with department/unit leaders and health care professionals to improve care.

  • Leads health system teams to advance the clinical practice of nurses and improve patient outcomes.

  • Leads design, implementation, and evaluation of innovative models of care into practice

  • Designs, implements, and evaluates programs and initiatives within clinical practice domain that are aligned withthe organization's strategic plan priorities, regulatory agency requirements, and the nursing department's strategic planpriorities

  • Leads and participates in committees, work groups and/or project teams related to clinical practice area.

  • Participates in professional organizations and contributes to advancing professional nursing practice through scholarly activities (presentations, publications, innovations)

  • Participates in the value analysis and evaluation of medical devices, therapy programs, and models of health care delivery.

  • Increases the visibility of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Nursing at local, regional, national and international levels.

  • Responsible for the written document for Magnet submission regarding clinical practice exemplars within content area.

  • Collaborates with the interprofessional team and leadersto ensure implementation of evidence- based patient care, optimal communication methods, and continuous quality improvement.

  • Creates and revises nursing policies, procedures, standards of care incorporating evidence- based practice to impact optimal patient/family outcomes.

  • Collaborates with Nurse Professional Development team and others on content and operational design of orientation, clinical competencies, and other educational program development.

  • Designs and evaluates innovative educational programs for patients, families, and groups.

  • Provides mentorship for new skill acquisition, leadership, and to support professional development of the nursing staff.

  • Provides formal and informal education for nurses and other health care professionals and health professional students.

  • Evaluates the impact of nursing practice and care models on fiscal and human resources.

  • Provides clinical consultation to nurses, providers, and interprofessional team colleagues regarding nursing care of the oncology patient population.

  • Partners with the Nursing Quality & Analytics, Nurse Professional Development, Clinical Practice, and Research & Scholarship teams and other nurse leaders to meet department and

health system strategic goals to advance nursing practice at UCSF.
