Part-Time Public Affairs Education Assistant

Helix Water District is seeking a part-time Public Affairs Education Assistant to help bring our water education programs to life. In this role, you'll deliver interactive classroom presentations and guide elementary students through hands-on tours of our Treatment Plant. With a schedule aligned to the academic year, you'll enjoy having the holidays and summers off. The Details:

• Schedule: Our ideal candidate will be available to work Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., with occasional work on Saturdays, for a total 8-16 hours per week. Schedule varies depending on tour schedules and administrative needs of the district.
• Salary: $21.00 - $30.00/hour, DOQ. Part-time positions are limited to 950 hours per fiscal year. (July 1 – June 30)
• Work Location: This position is based out of our Administration Office in La Mesa, CA.
• Benefits: Part-time employees receive 40 hours of paid sick leave once they reach their 90th day of employment. (Part-time employees do not receive medical benefits)

Overview of Responsibilities

Our Public Affairs Education Assistant supports a variety of educational and administrative functions. Here's what we're looking for:

You'll need strong communication skills to coordinate with teachers, school administrators, and members of the public. This role requires the ability to clearly share information about our programs, organize and schedule tours, and present water-related concepts in a lively, age-appropriate way.

A genuine interest in education and community engagement is essential. Your enthusiasm will help create memorable learning experiences that spark curiosity and build understanding of water treatment, distribution, and the water cycle for students and the broader community.

Confidence in public speaking is a must. You'll deliver scripted presentations, engage audiences, and respond to student questions with ease and clarity.

In addition to creativity, excellent organization is key. Managing schedules, tracking program participation, and processing invoices requires attention to detail and the ability to keep administrative tasks running smoothly.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have a minimum of two years of experience teaching, training, leading tours or giving presentations and a valid California Class C driver's license. Experience working with elementary school students and science education is preferred.

Ideal candidates will:

• Be responsible and enthusiastic. They will have the ability to communicate and present information effectively, while also being able to effectively comprehend, interpret and follow oral and written instructions.
• Possess computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office, and the ability to plan, coordinate, and organize work to meet deadlines.
• Able to reach and lift items up to 25 lbs., the ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time, and traverse stairs.
• Ability to perform job duties in a variety of weather conditions. A portion of the tours are located outdoors.
