Job Title: MIG Welder

Job Description

This role focuses on performing high-quality MIG welding and fabrication on mild steel components, working from detailed blueprints to build structural frames used in demanding applications. You will handle the full welding process from setup and measurement through cutting, fitting, welding, and finishing, contributing to a growing operation that values craftsmanship over simple production welding.

Responsibilities

• Perform MIG welding on mild steel ranging from 12 gauge to 1 inch thickness in flat, vertical down, and overhead positions.
• Set up welding equipment and workstations independently, including Miller welders, to meet job specifications.
• Read and interpret blueprints to understand dimensions, weld symbols, and fabrication requirements.
• Measure, cut, bend, and build frames according to prints, ensuring accuracy and structural integrity.
• Convert decimals to fractions and use a tape measure accurately to 1/16 of an inch.
• Use hand and power tools, tape measures, and other measuring tools to prepare and assemble components.
• Fit and assemble structural and fabricated parts prior to welding, ensuring proper alignment and fit-up.
• Grind and polish welds to meet quality and appearance standards.
• Work with mild steel, flux core, and structural steel materials as required by each project.
• Maintain a safe and organized work area, following shop safety procedures and using required personal protective equipment.
• Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production schedules and quality expectations.
• Troubleshoot and adjust welding parameters to ensure proper penetration, bead appearance, and weld strength.

Essential Skills

• MIG welding experience on mild steel, including flat, vertical down, and overhead positions.
• Approximately 5 years of MIG welding experience on mild steel, flux core, and structural steel.
• Ability to set up and operate Miller welders and related welding equipment.
• Blueprint reading skills with at least 3 years of experience interpreting fabrication drawings.
• Proficiency using a tape measure accurately to 1/16 of an inch and converting decimals to fractions.
• Experience in fabrication, including measuring, cutting, bending, fitting, and assembly of frames and structural components.
• Skilled use of hand and power tools, including grinders and other metalworking tools.
• Ability to grind and polish welds to meet quality standards.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds and assemblies.
• Capability to work independently as a complete welder, not limited to repetitive production tasks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a structural steel or fabrication shop environment.
• Comfort working from start to finish on fabrication projects, including setup, fit-up, welding, and finishing.
• Ability to adapt to changing workloads and priorities in a busy, growing shop.
• Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with peers and leadership.

Work Environment

This is a 1st shift position operating on a 4-day, 10-hour schedule, typically from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with Fridays generally reserved and used as needed based on workload and optional Saturday work when demand is high. The shop employs roughly 80 people and is planning to grow significantly. Work takes place in a fabrication and welding environment that uses Miller welders, a variety of hand and power tools, and modern machinery in facilities that include a new, spacious building with high ceilings and excellent lighting. The operation is located in an iron works district and is connected to amenities such as a golf simulator and bar, contributing to a relaxed yet focused atmosphere. Personal protective equipment is required, including steel-toed shoes, eye protection, and hearing protection, reflecting a strong emphasis on safety. The environment is described as laid back, with a direct, hands-on leadership style and a culture that encourages growth from within

This is a Permanent position based out of Beloit, WI.

The pay range for this position is $45000.00 - $60000.00/yr.

4-10 schedule - try to not work OT but currently working some OT Growing company - they build parts for Data centers, which that industry is taking off In the Iron works district - connected to a golf simulator and bar. Their other facility is Brand new facility with tons of space, great lighting, new machinery and high ceilings. They plan to move everything to the new building sometime over the summer of 2025 80 person shop with a lot of growth discussions to get over 100 employees Welding Manager started as a welder and they moved him into a leadership role. A lot of growth opps at MTL Laid back environment Extremely competitive pay for the market Direct Hire $1 for 2nd shift Annual raises: Don't do a lot of annual raises, they would bump people up throughout the year Benefits and insurances: $500 deductible for medical - company pays 65%, dental, vision, life insurance, 401k Vacation: 1 week after 1 year, 2 weeks after 2, can get an extra week per year based on attendance Company outings: Christmas part offsite, full dinner, open bar, door prizes, lunches every 6 weeks.
