Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor – Torts Division (Job Number: 419244) The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel (“ACC”) Supervisor in its Torts Division. Torts has an active litigation and trial practice defending the City and its employees in personal injury lawsuits filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County. The Division is particularly interested in candidates with substantial medical malpractice litigation experience; however, attorneys with significant experience in premises liability, motor vehicle accidents, and police litigation are encouraged to apply. The Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor is responsible for an individual docket of cases often with higher exposure and in-depth discovery and motion practices, serves as lead counsel at jury trials, makes settlement recommendations, and engages in negotiations. Under the direction of the Torts Deputy and Chiefs, the Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor manages line attorneys including training and conducting case reviews. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ideal candidates will possess the following Medical malpractice litigation experience or significant litigation experience in premises liability, motor vehicle accidents, police pursuits, or other complex personal injury matters. Preference may be given to candidates possessing the following: Five (5) years of work experience as a licensed attorney litigating personal injury cases of increasing complexity; Five (5) jury trials, including acting as first chair and presenting and cross-examining medical and other opinion witnesses at trial; Significant legal writing experience and substantive motion practice; Experience negotiating settlements; Demonstrated leadership and initiative; The ability to work well with others; and Experience supervising, training, or mentoring others in the legal field. Assistant Corporation Counsel III – Torts Division (Job Number: 419006) The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel in its Torts Division. Attorneys in the Torts Division have an active civil defense litigation and trial practice. Torts attorneys engage in discovery and motion practice, retain and depose medical and other experts, engage in hearings and jury trials, and make recommendations and participate in settlement negotiations. The Assistant Corporation Counsel’s work will be in either the personal injury defense or medical malpractice defense division, depending on the experience and interests of the applicant and the current needs of the Division. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ideal candidates will possess the following: Interest and/or experience in litigation and trial work Interest and/or experience in medical damages Effective communication skills; Demonstrated strength in legal research and writing; Self-starter with the ability to take initiative as demonstrated by past achievements and leadership and; Ability to work well with others and manage workflow and deadlines.
