Consultant, Brokerage Casualty Underwriting - E&S/Specialty

Key Responsibilities Research and develop new classes of business. Research market trends and competition. Assess market viability, create forms and endorsements, and develop rates with actuarial support. For large, complex accounts, partner with the Actuarial team to develop rates and pricing, the Finance team to review potential insured profitability, and the Claims team to review SIR viability and potential loss frequency and severity. Review individual risks with assigned brokers and either decline or accept business based on necessary information. Analyze exposures to loss, develop an adequate premium, and determine endorsements and exclusions for the insurance contract. Place reinsurance, if any, within department guidelines. Achieve team and individual production and loss ratio goals through sound broker management and marketing. Handle the most complex coverage, terms, and conditions issues with brokers. Continuously analyze premium and loss results of assigned brokers by state and major classes of business. Assess the quality of broker submissions and recommend corrective actions. Oversee policy maintenance items and mid‑term requests. Review endorsement requests and authorize necessary policy changes. Review loss control reports and recommendations, and partner with brokers to ensure loss control compliance. Follow up on outstanding information as required. Review claim activity and take appropriate action. Foster positive business relationships with brokers through frequent contact and resolve broker conflicts. Travel to broker offices for training or marketing visits. Entertains brokers visiting the company as required. Assist with the development of marketing ideas and strategies for underwriting events and other campaigns. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of facultative reinsurance and place reinsurance per department guidelines. Maintain a good working relationship with reinsurers. Resolve the most complex technical questions. Proactively develop technical and business knowledge through internal and external venues. Teach classes to build underwriting knowledge for brokers and underwriters. Mentor new and existing underwriting talent. Perform other responsibilities as assigned. Reporting Relationships Reports to Underwriting Manager. May have up to three direct reports. Typical Skills and Experiences Education : Undergraduate degree preferred (equivalent work experience considered). License/Certification/Designation : Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred. Experience : Eight years of CL underwriting experience, handling large or complex accounts; excess & surplus lines experience preferred. Knowledge : Complex CL underwriting policies, practices, and procedures; insurance law and underwriting/marketing principles; Standard Bureau Rating plans and catastrophe management concepts; alternative rating methods and pricing theory; treaty and facultative reinsurance; regulatory issues, wholesale broker system, market conditions, and company operations. Job Conditions Overtime eligibility: Exempt (Not Eligible). Working conditions: Normal office environment; extended and non‑standard work hours based on project and customer deliverable.
