The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs. The Center enjoys broad-based community support as well as a sponsored relationship with its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. St. Joseph Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually.

Brief Description of Principal Activities

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at four sites on the Westside of Los Angeles. St. Joseph Center’s integrated programs provide clients with concentrated and coordinated access to services according to the nature of their needs.

Job Description

About the Role

The Hygiene Manager provides day-to-day leadership for the Care Campus's shower, restroom, and laundry services. This role is responsible for ensuring that hygiene services are safe, clean, accessible, organized, and delivered in a way that protects participant dignity, privacy, and choice.

The Hygiene Manager leads the Hygiene team and is accountable for staffing and coverage, participant flow, sanitation and infection-prevention practices, supplies and inventory, equipment readiness, and coordination of facility and maintenance needs. The role works closely with Safety, Client Support Specialists, Case Management, Facilities, healthcare and behavioral health partners, and other Campus teams to support a safe and welcoming participant experience.

Key Responsibilities

Hygiene Services & Participant Experience

• Lead daily operations of participant shower, restroom, and laundry services, including opening, shift transition, and closing procedures.
• Monitor participant flow, service capacity, wait times, utilization, and emerging needs, adjusting operations as needed to maintain accessible and effective services.
• Maintain consistent practices that protect participant privacy, dignity, safety, and equitable access.
• Respond to participant concerns, conflicts, complaints, and service barriers and work with other Campus teams to connect participants to additional services and resources when appropriate.

People Leadership & Staffing

• Supervise, coach, develop, and evaluate Hygiene Leads and Hygiene Specialists.
• Build and manage staffing schedules, shift assignments, breaks, call-off coverage, and day-to-day staffing adjustments.
• Establish clear expectations for participant engagement, sanitation, safety, documentation, attendance, teamwork, and professional conduct.
• Monitor staffing trends such as overtime, vacancies, attendance, and turnover and partner with People + Culture and Campus leadership on recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and employee relations.

Sanitation, Safety & Infection Prevention

• Maintain strong cleanliness, sanitation, infection-prevention, workplace-safety, and PPE standards throughout showers, restrooms, laundry areas, and related spaces.
• Ensure appropriate procedures are followed for bodily fluids, sharps, contaminated materials, wet surfaces, and other exposure or environmental hazards.
• Maintain procedures for identifying and responding to medical emergencies, behavioral health crises, suspected overdoses, falls, and other safety concerns while protecting participant privacy.
• Ensure Hygiene staff understand when to involve Safety, clinical staff, emergency responders, or Campus leadership and are prepared to respond within the scope of their training.

Laundry, Supplies & Facility Readiness

• Oversee laundry operations, including safe handling, tracking, and return of participant belongings.
• Maintain adequate inventories of hygiene, laundry, cleaning, PPE, and other operational supplies and ensure materials are safely stored and responsibly used.
• Conduct routine inspections of hygiene areas and equipment and coordinate repairs, preventative maintenance, plumbing, equipment, sanitation, and related facility needs with Facilities.
• Develop temporary operating solutions when equipment or facility issues affect service availability.

Quality, Compliance & Collaboration

• Maintain required operational records and service documentation and monitor utilization, participant needs, incidents, and service disruptions.
• Participate in audits, inspections, incident reviews, corrective-action activities, and quality-improvement efforts.
• Use participant feedback, service information, staff observations, and incident trends to strengthen operations and service quality.
• Work closely with Safety, Client Support, Case Management, Facilities, healthcare, behavioral health, and other Campus teams to resolve issues and support coordinated services.

Qualifications

What You'll Bring

• High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree in human services, hospitality, operations, public health, social services, or a related field preferred.
• Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in homeless services, hygiene services, shelter operations, hospitality, facilities, social services, or another high-volume service environment preferred.
• Two or more years of supervisory, management, or team-leadership experience preferred.
• Experience managing frontline staff, scheduling, coverage, and day-to-day service operations strongly preferred.
• Experience serving individuals experiencing homelessness and people with behavioral health, substance use, medical, or other complex needs preferred.
• Experience with sanitation, infection prevention, workplace safety, inventory management, or facilities coordination preferred.
• Strong staff leadership, organization, communication, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
• Understanding of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, person-centered services, professional boundaries, and de-escalation.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic systems used for scheduling, documentation, incident reporting, inventory, and communication.

Regular use of a computer and HR technology platforms is required, along with the ability to manage detailed records and sustained periods of screen-based work.
