Overview Crean Lutheran High School - Irvine, CA 92618 Description Position Summary Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (Evenings as assigned) Education Required: MA or MS in Counseling or a similar discipline preferred Years of Experience: Two, with a focus in secondary education (desired) Travel: Minimal Starting Salary: TBD; commensurate with experience Reports to: Senior Director of Student Wellness The Dean of Students is responsible for partnering with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to provide support for attendance and discipline while maintaining a positive school climate and culture that upholds our mission of Proclaiming Jesus Christ through Excellence in Education. Knowledgeable and competent in areas of safe school culture necessary to support school ministry and operations, both curricular and extracurricular. Essential Functions Possesses exemplary decision making and problem analysis skills. Proficient with Google documents, Microsoft software products and various tools and equipment. Will incorporate, understand, and utilize technology. Effectively and appropriately collaborate with faculty and staff members. Model professionalism through attire, punctual attendance, behavior, and safety. Model a Gospel-centered approach in day-to-day relationships with students, faculty and staff members, and parents, and foster such an approach among everyone on campus. Will read, agree to, and abide by the Employee Handbook. “Jesus-proof” all communications and public CLHS presentations, reflecting our Christ-centered culture and focus, and maintaining the branding of CLHS. Work in a supportive and coordinating manner with all departments. Be present for the duration of the typical work day (7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) unless an adjustment is arranged in partnership with the Vice Principal of Student Services. Will fulfill related duties, as assigned. Qualifications Supervision and Safety Jointly handles investigation and subsequent follow up on purported threats to students, campus personnel, or campus infrastructure. Proactively ensures that students are in class, locate students who are out of class and/or truant, and document accordingly. Will attend all dances, home football games, and major (CIF) playoff events for all sports. Will coordinate supervision duties with the Activities Coordinator to provide adequate supervision for CLHS dances. Will coordinate with the Athletic Department in the supervision of the Blue Zone at Athletic Events. Will assist in the implementation of the plan for proper conduct of participants and spectators. Will seek out students as needed for behavior concerns. Will supervise student behavior during chapel and PEP rallies. Will provide support to the Supervision team in enforcing the school’s dress code. Attend and/or assign/ monitor detention and Saturday detention, as needed. Discipline Will update and enforce all policies and procedures outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook. Partners with Teachers, Counselors, and Campus Supervisors to enforce school policies and assigns disciplinary consequences as needed for students who violate school/classroom rules. Will meet with Counselors and Teachers as needed in order to ensure behavioral interventions are established and in place. Will maintain accurate records to track major behavioral concerns. Confers with teachers to develop individual preventive discipline plans. Will jointly ensure that faculty and staff are properly trained for behavioral intervention. Is responsible for ensuring that students with learning differences (e.g. LSP students and/or students on contracts) are addressed behaviorally according to their accommodations and needs. Is responsible for retaining and managing information related to behavioral accommodations and behavioral contracts. Handles referrals as assigned. Works with the students, parents/guardians, and teachers to improve the behavior of the student. Jointly assists the administration in the development of discipline policy. Maintains disciplinary files. Compiles information from student referral incidents. Categorizes and analyzes this information to use in developing broader building level preventive disciplinary procedures or practices. Exercises appropriate leadership in processing student behavioral and attendance problems, including accurate record-keeping of incidents as well as communication with parents. Exercises discretion and independent judgment on when to use Aeries Communications to stakeholders for use in daily attendance, school emergencies, and any other communication deemed necessary. Will recommend policies and procedures related to attendance and discipline policies. Will make recommendations concerning the revision and updating of student rules, regulations, and handbooks. In collaboration with the Senior Director of Student Wellness, will approve or deny requests for nonuniform dress days. Specialized area of focus (one per Dean) Health Will be the main point of contact on all major/minor health-related injuries/incidents. Will collect, manage, distribute, and document all documented medication on campus. Administer medications and monitor delegated medication administration. Render first-aid treatment to injured and ill students; performs CPR in emergency situations and takes AED to the site of emergency as needed. Provide training for specific health protocols on campus (ex: Narcan, Epi pens). Attendance Supervises and is accountable for the maintenance and accuracy of each student's attendance record. Tracks attendance and tardy concerns. Runs reports, assigns discipline for attendance as outlined in the Parent & Student Handbook, enters discipline information into Aeries, and contacts families. Meets with students and parents regarding ongoing attendance concerns. Supervises and is jointly responsible for student attendance with the Attendance Clerk who is responsible for daily student attendance input in Aeries, processing parent emails and phone calls, and distributing call slips to students needing to be released early. Trains faculty/staff/substitutes on attendance policy/procedures. Skills and Abilities Education – MA or MS in Counseling or a similar discipline preferred Experience – Two, with a focus in secondary education (desired) Spiritually Grounded – Minister and pray with others; provide spiritual resources; communicate the love of Jesus in person and over the phone to further the mission of the School. Attend and participate in daily devotionals; lead devotionals on a rotating schedule with staff and faculty. Regularly pray with students, lead them in worship, minister, teach, etc. Certificates and Licenses – PPSC (Pupil Personnel Services Credential) preferred or similar certification, driver’s license Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and see. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must have the ability to read, prepare/process documents and to direct others if necessary in carrying out duties. Working Environment Work is performed primarily in an office, vehicle, or outdoor environment, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts and may be exposed to dust, odors, oil, fumes, and more; regular contact with staff, parents, and students; with frequent interruptions. The noise level in the office and school campus environment can range from quiet to moderate. Extensive contacts with students and may handle cash transactions when needed.
