Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography)

Summary This position is assigned to Computed Tomography - Imaging section - Radiology Service at the Atlanta VA Health Care System. The incumbent utilizes knowledge of cross-sectional human anatomy & its application in spiral - and/or - multi-slice computer tomography - inclusive of 3‑D reconstruction scans - including drainages - biopsies - & peripheral vascular examinations. He/she will judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use & emphasize the aspects of interest to the physician. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or mammography (M) duties performed independently – as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and has passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, technologists who do not possess advanced certification may receive on‑job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Must have completed a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high school diagnostic radiologic technology program – evidence by a certificate or an associate degree – accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or recognized accrediting agencies. Grandfathering Provision: All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series, and grade held. English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by U.S. law. Grade Determinations: GS‑09 requires at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position. Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, higher‑level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity, and variety, performed at least 25% of the time. Technical KSAs: Ability to balance patient and staff needs while performing complex scans; assess contraindications; gather relevant information from the medical record and providers; knowledge of first aid, basic life support, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods, universal precautions; knowledge of pre‑procedural, procedural, and post‑procedural patient care. Preferred Experience: 1‑5 years CT experience with CT registry required. Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Duties Perform independently head and body Computerized Axial Tomography (CT) scans using standard and non‑standard procedures, including CT Angiography and Cardiac studies. Explain exams to patients so they understand what is to be done and any possible hazards. Perform daily calibrations on the Computed Tomography scanner. Determine technical factors—positioning, number, and thickness of scans—to satisfy CT scanning requirements. Maintain flexibility to rearrange the schedule to accommodate critically ill and emergency patients. Maintain permanent storage of scans on optical disk and record and retrieve information from the archival system. Maintain and transport all lab work with proper documentation to the lab area. Assist the Radiologist or Supervisor (CT) with developing new protocols and updating outdated protocols to maintain state‑of‑the‑art technology. Perform IV injections using proper sterile techniques. Assist the Radiologist with sterile operating room procedures, including scrub‑in during invasive procedures. Work schedule: Saturday – Sunday, 8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.; Tuesday – Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; schedule subject to change based on agency needs. Relocation/Recruitment Incentive: Authorized Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases; higher step rate may be determined for unique qualifications. Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time per year (13‑26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of eligible childcare costs, up to a monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contributions by VA; federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance (many can be carried into retirement).
