Overhead Crane Technician
Steel River Companies
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARY The Overhead Crane Technician is a hands-on field role responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining overhead cranes, hoists, and related material handling equipment at customer sites, ensuring equipment operates safely and efficiently to meet customer production demands. This position performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on mechanical, electrical, and control systems, documents work accurately, and represents CraneTech professionally at customer facilities across a variety of industrial environments. CraneTech is a National Safety Council member and holds its inspections to CMAA standards, not just baseline OSHA/ANSI compliance, and this role is central to that standard. Many of CraneTech's Site Lead Technicians, Branch Managers, and NACB Technical Trainers started their careers as Overhead Crane Technicians — strong performers have a real path to grow within CraneTech, NACB, or Hunter Lift. WHAT STEEL RIVER OFFERS Medical coverage through Cigna, with a choice of three plan levels including an HSA-eligible option, plus dental coverage through Guardian (with an option that includes orthodontia) and vision coverage through Guardian VSP. Company-paid Basic Life and AD&D insurance, with voluntary options for supplemental life, short- and long-term disability, critical illness, accident, and hospital indemnity coverage. A 401(k) plan through Fidelity Investments with a company match — 100% of the first 3% and 50% of the next 2% of what you contribute — and eligibility to enroll on the first of the month after you're hired. Free, confidential counseling, legal, financial, and work-life support through the company's Employee Assistance Program, telemedicine covered in full, and a company wellness program. Paid time off that grows with your tenure, plus paid company holidays (including Veterans Day for veteran and active-duty employees). An annual $200 boot and tool reimbursement, plus a $150 annual safety glasses reimbursement. A company vehicle, tools, and a company-provided phone or tablet to do the job — you're not buying your own equipment for this work. Overtime pay for hours worked beyond a standard 40-hour week (including Saturdays), and double pay (2x) for any hours worked on a Sunday. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES The functions below are essential to this position. This list is representative, not exhaustive; the employee may perform other related duties as assigned. Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on overhead cranes, hoists, and related material handling equipment at customer sites. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control system issues, including motors, drives, variable frequency drives (VFDs), brakes, wire rope, and rigging hardware. Perform periodic and frequent inspections in accordance with CMAA, OSHA, and ANSI standards, evaluating equipment condition and documenting findings and safety recommendations for customers. Complete accurate, timely electronic service reports, inspection checklists, and time entries using a company-provided phone, computer, or tablet and associated software. Respond to preventive maintenance visits, scheduled repairs, and emergency service calls, working to safely restore customer equipment to operation, including temporary repairs while parts are sourced when needed. Assist with the installation, modernization, and commissioning of new or upgraded crane and hoisting equipment, including retrofits and safety upgrades. Maintain the company vehicle, tools, and parts inventory necessary to complete assigned service work. Communicate directly and professionally with customers on-site to explain findings, repair options, and safety concerns. Collaborate with the Site Lead Technician, Service Coordinator, and branch team to plan daily work assignments and ensure jobs are completed safely, on time, and to customer expectations. Identify potential additional service, repair, or sales opportunities observed during customer visits and communicate them to the service or sales team. Follow all company and OSHA safety protocols — including lockout/tagout, fall protection, and required PPE use — in shop and field environments. Travel to customer sites within the assigned service territory, including overnight travel as needed, to deliver timely service and support. QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience No specific college degree is required for this role — Steel River provides comprehensive hands-on training regardless of your educational background. High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school training in industrial electrical, mechanical systems, or a related field preferred. 3+ years of experience as a crane service technician or in a related trade (electrical, mechanical, industrial maintenance) required. Certifications & Licenses Valid driver's license in good standing required. OSHA 10/30 preferred; relevant crane/rigging inspection certifications (e.g., NCCCO) preferred. This position is subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations: must pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and DOT physical, and maintain a current Driver Qualification (DQ) file and DOT medical certification for the duration of employment in this role. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and control systems as applied to overhead cranes and hoists, including single- and three-phase power, AC/DC motor controls, and VFDs. Ability to learn and apply new mechanical, electrical, and industrial skills as equipment and technology evolve. Comfortable working at significant heights and in a variety of industrial production environments. Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting service work and interacting professionally with customers. Proficient with a company-provided phone, computer, or tablet and software to complete electronic forms and reports. Strong safety mindset with working knowledge of OSHA/ANSI standards. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while on customer sites. Willingness and ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays, and to travel overnight, as needed. WORK ENVIRONMENT Profile A — Field & Shop Technical Role This position operates in a combination of shop and field environments typical of overhead crane and material handling equipment service. Work is performed inside industrial facilities — manufacturing plants, steel mills, warehouses, and distribution centers — as well as outdoors at construction sites and customer yards, with exposure to seasonal weather and temperature extremes. Employees regularly work at heights on crane bridges, runways, and platforms, and may use ladders, aerial lifts, or fall-protection equipment. The role involves working around heavy machinery, moving equipment, and suspended loads, with exposure to noise, dust, grease, and vibration. Some assignments require travel to customer locations, including overnight travel, and may include after-hours, weekend, or emergency/on-call response. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times in shop and field settings. TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Travel is primarily local/regional to customer jobsites within the branch's service territory. Some assignments — including shutdowns, multi-day projects, or coverage in other territories — require overnight travel. REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION Steel River Companies is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities to enable them to perform the essential functions of their role, consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and applicable state and local law. Employees or candidates who require an accommodation should contact Human Resources. EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Steel River Companies is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.
