Fall 2026 Liberty and National Security Legal Internship

Overview The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve the systems of democracy and justice in the United States. Our Liberty and National Security (LNS) Program fights to preserve constitutional values in the post‑9/11 world, focusing on reining in the abuse of emergency powers and preventing excessive government secrecy while protecting fundamental freedoms. Location This internship is in‑person at the Brennan Center’s Washington, D.C. office. Responsibilities Conduct legal research and write amicus briefs, policy reports, and other advocacy documents. Draft legislative proposals at federal, state, and local levels. Assist with advocating for legislative change, including communications to legislators and comments to federal agencies. Collaborate on litigation research for trial and appellate courts. Draft posts for the Brennan Center blog and participate in coalition meetings. Support programmatic and strategic planning initiatives. Qualifications Excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills. Initiative, imagination, and versatility. Passion for issues related to liberty, national security, privacy, and civil liberties. Law school students entering the Fall 2026 term (eligible for paid internship as per school policy). Compensation Hours: approximately 10–15 hours per week. Pay: $20.90 per hour. Duration September – December 2026. Application Deadline July 24 2026.
