Public Benefit Specialist

The Opportunity Location: On‑Site at Carilion - New River Valley, Christiansburg, VA Pay: $18.65 – $20.50 per hour, based on experience. Essential Job Functions Review all referred uninsured/under‑insured patients for program eligibility opportunities and coordinate the application process to facilitate accurate submissions. Communicate effectively with patients to obtain required documents for the application. Follow up on submitted applications through to determination, updating insurance information and ensuring timely billing or adjustment posting. Document all relevant actions and communications in the assigned patient accounting system. Maintain a working knowledge of state and federal program requirements and share information with colleagues and supervisors. Develop and maintain proactive relationships with county, state, and federal Medicaid caseworker partners; collaborate with other revenue cycle departments and associates. Perform other duties as assigned. Employment Qualifications 1–2 years of experience in the healthcare industry, interacting with patients regarding hospital financial issues. Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred Understanding of the Revenue Cycle, including admission, billing, payments, and denials. Comprehensive knowledge of the patient insurance process for obtaining authorizations and benefits verification. Knowledge of health insurance requirements and medical terminology or CPT/procedure codes. Experience in patient access with managed care/insurance and call‑center operations is highly preferred. Inquisitive mindset and openness to innovation, including AI, to improve processes and patient/client experiences. Minimum Education High School Diploma or GED. Post‑secondary education combined with experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Certifications CRCR certification within 9 months of hire.
