Tax Director / Senior Tax Manager / Principal

Overview

Our client, a well-established and growth-oriented public accounting firm, is seeking a senior-level tax professional (Senior Manager, Director, or Principal) to take on a high-impact leadership role. The firm provides comprehensive tax, accounting, and advisory services to closely held businesses and high-net-worth individuals, with a strong emphasis on long-term client relationships and operational efficiency.

This opportunity is ideal for a CPA who is ready to transition from primarily technical execution into a more strategic role focused on client ownership, advisory, and firm leadership.

There is a clear and defined path to equity/Principal-level participation for the right individual.

This position is based in the Portland, OR metro area and offers flexibility between in-office and hybrid work arrangements. Preference is given to local candidates, though relocation may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary advisor and relationship lead for a portfolio of business and individual clients
• Deliver proactive tax planning strategies aligned to client objectives
• Identify opportunities to expand service offerings and deepen client engagement
• Review a broad range of tax returns, including partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, and individuals
• Maintain signing authority as a licensed CPA
• Ensure accuracy, compliance, and adherence to professional standards and internal quality controls
• Lead and mentor a team across multiple experience levels
• Provide technical guidance and support on complex tax matters
• Oversee workflow management in collaboration with firm leadership
• Contribute to firm-wide initiatives, including process improvement and operational efficiency
• Support capacity planning and resource allocation, particularly during peak seasons
• Participate in business development efforts through referrals, networking, and client expansion

Qualifications

• Active CPA license required
• 8–15+ years of progressive public accounting experience
• Currently operating at the Senior Manager, Director, or Partner level
• Deep experience reviewing complex tax engagements and managing client portfolios
• Proven ability to lead teams and manage multiple priorities simultaneously
• Strong communication skills with a consultative, client-facing approach

• Experience working with closely held businesses and high-net-worth individuals
• Demonstrated success in client retention and organic growth
• Exposure to firm operations, leadership, or strategic planning initiatives
• Familiarity with modern tax and practice management systems (e.g., leading cloud-based platforms)
