A Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) works under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to help individuals with communication and swallowing disorders.
The SLPA supports the SLP in the assessment and treatment of speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders. The SLPA performs delegated tasks, assists in data collection, and contributes to the maintenance of treatment plans.

A Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) works under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to help individuals with communication and swallowing disorders.
The SLPA supports the SLP in the assessment and treatment of speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders. The SLPA performs delegated tasks, assists in data collection, and contributes to the maintenance of treatment plans.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in Assessment and Treatment:
- Follow treatment plans or protocols developed by the SLP.
- Provide direct therapy services to students under the supervision of the SLP.
- Use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices and other technology as directed.
- Conduct screenings for speech, language, and hearing.
- Data Collection and Documentation:
- Record accurate and timely session notes.
- Collect data on student performance and progress during therapy sessions.
- Assist the SLP in preparing progress reports and documentation for students.
- Student and Family Interaction:
- Educate and support students and their families about therapy activities and goals.
- Demonstrate therapy techniques to students and caregivers for home practice.
- Maintain student confidentiality and adhere to confidentiality guidelines.
- Administrative Support:
- Assist with scheduling sessions.
- Prepare and maintain session materials and equipment.
- Participate in team meetings and collaborate with other staff.
- Professional Development:
- Engage in continuing education opportunities to maintain and enhance professional skills.
- Stay current with developments in the field of speech-language pathology.
- Education and Certification:
- Associate's degree in a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program or a related field.
- SLPA certification or licensure as required by state regulations.
- CPR certification may be required.
- Experience:
- Experience working with individuals with communication disorders is preferred.
- Clinical experience obtained through internships or practicum placements.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with computer software.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Physical activities may include sitting, standing, walking, and lifting therapy materials.
- The role may require travel between different locations.
