Senior/Staff Software Engineer

The Senior/Staff Software Engineer will help build and scale a modern interactive learning platform designed to make higher education more accessible to learners worldwide. You will contribute across a broad range of products, including core learning experiences, content authoring tools, AI-powered tutoring and advising capabilities, and student-facing communities. This role is well suited to a versatile engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and moving between different areas of a growing platform. You will work closely with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to design reliable, scalable solutions that support an expanding user base. Accountabilities

• Design, develop, maintain, and enhance software across a growing interactive learning platform and its supporting products.
• Contribute to core platform capabilities, content authoring tools, AI-powered learning experiences, student networking features, and other strategic initiatives.
• Work across different projects and technical areas, adapting quickly to evolving priorities and business needs.
• Design and evolve robust data models that support scalable and maintainable application functionality.
• Write, profile, troubleshoot, and optimize SQL queries to ensure reliable and efficient data access.
• Develop and enhance front-end experiences using JavaScript and modern frameworks such as React.
• Collaborate closely with engineers, product stakeholders, and other teams to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
• Participate in technical design, code reviews, testing, debugging, and continuous improvement of engineering practices.
• Work autonomously to identify problems, propose solutions, and deliver high-quality software in a fast-paced startup environment.
• Contribute to platform scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability as the user base grows.
• Apply DevOps and cloud-native practices where appropriate to improve deployment, infrastructure, and operational efficiency.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience developing Ruby on Rails applications in production environments.
• Strong experience designing and evolving application data models.
• Demonstrated ability to write, profile, analyze, and optimize SQL queries.
• 3+ years of professional JavaScript experience, including work with modern front-end frameworks such as React.
• Production experience with PostgreSQL and relational database systems.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to build maintainable, scalable applications.
• Comfortable working independently and taking ownership in a fast-paced, evolving startup environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and enthusiasm for learning new technologies and working across different areas of a platform.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Authorization to work in the United States.
• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred.
• DevOps experience is a plus, particularly with Kubernetes, Helm, and related cloud-native technologies.
