Job Objective
The Maintenance Supervisor provides leadership and direction to the Maintenance team to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of production equipment, machinery, and facility support systems. This position is responsible for supervising and developing maintenance technicians, prioritizing daily maintenance activities, coordinating preventive and corrective maintenance, and partnering with Production and Engineering to minimize equipment downtime and support operational goals.
This is a hands-on working leadership position . The Maintenance Supervisor is expected to be actively engaged on the production floor, providing technical guidance, assisting with troubleshooting and complex repairs, and ensuring maintenance priorities are effectively executed.
The Supervisor is accountable for the overall performance, responsiveness, and effectiveness of the maintenance team while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, equipment reliability, productivity, and continuous improvement .
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise, lead, and develop Maintenance Technicians to ensure effective coverage and support of manufacturing operations.
- Establish clear expectations for safety, quality, productivity, responsiveness, communication, housekeeping, and professionalism.
- Assign and prioritize daily maintenance work based on production requirements, equipment condition, safety concerns, and business priorities.
- Monitor completion of assigned work and ensure maintenance activities are performed thoroughly, efficiently, and according to established standards.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, training, and technical development to maintenance personnel.
- Identify skill gaps and coordinate cross-training and development opportunities to strengthen team capabilities.
- Provide timely feedback and address performance, attendance, or conduct issues in accordance with company policies.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, ownership, and a positive problem-solving culture within the Maintenance team.
- Ensure appropriate maintenance coverage is maintained throughout the shift.
- Serve as the primary maintenance leadership resource for the 2nd shift.
Production & Equipment Support
- Partner closely with Production leadership to respond to equipment issues and minimize production interruptions.
- Monitor equipment downtime and maintenance response to ensure critical production needs are addressed promptly.
- Establish priorities when multiple equipment issues occur simultaneously, balancing safety, production requirements, equipment criticality, and available resources.
- Ensure critical-path equipment and production requirements receive appropriate maintenance support.
- Communicate equipment status, expected repair timelines, and potential production impacts to Production and management.
- Coordinate recovery efforts when equipment failures affect production schedules.
- Identify recurring equipment problems and ensure permanent corrective actions are pursued rather than relying solely on temporary repairs.
- Work with Production and Engineering to identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, efficiency, and performance.
Maintenance Planning & Reliability
- Oversee the execution of preventive maintenance activities to ensure scheduled maintenance is completed accurately and on time.
- Review maintenance requirements and establish priorities for planned and unplanned work.
- Monitor preventive maintenance completion, equipment downtime, repeat failures, and other maintenance performance indicators.
- Ensure accurate documentation of repairs, preventive maintenance, equipment history, and work performed.
- Identify trends and recurring failures and lead or support root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Recommend equipment repairs, modifications, upgrades, or replacement based on reliability, safety, cost, and operational requirements.
- Assist in developing and maintaining effective preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Ensure maintenance tools, equipment, spare parts, and materials are available to support the team's needs.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with production schedules to minimize disruption.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical guidance and hands-on support to Maintenance Technicians during complex troubleshooting and repair activities.
- Assist with diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, CNC, and controls-related equipment problems.
- Support troubleshooting of CNC equipment, including systems such as Mazak, HAAS, Robert E. Morse, and other manufacturing equipment.
- Assist with troubleshooting programmable logic controllers, input/output devices, and machine controls using ladder logic and related diagnostic methods.
- Interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams, and equipment documentation.
- Work with Engineering and other technical resources to identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.
- Ensure repairs and modifications are completed using sound technical practices and appropriate procedures.
- Operate or utilize machining, fabrication, and other equipment when necessary to support maintenance activities.
Safety & Compliance
- Lead by example in maintaining a safe work environment and reinforcing safe work practices.
- Ensure Maintenance Technicians follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and company guidelines.
- Ensure proper Lockout/Tagout practices are followed during maintenance and repair activities.
- Identify unsafe equipment, conditions, or practices and take immediate action to address them.
- Ensure maintenance work is performed in a manner that protects employees, equipment, product, and facilities.
- Participate in safety investigations, corrective actions, and continuous safety improvement efforts.
- Ensure safety, quality, compliance, and integrity are never compromised to meet production schedules or output requirements.
Engineering & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with Engineering to troubleshoot complex equipment issues and determine root causes and corrective actions.
- Support equipment improvements, modifications, installations, and new equipment implementation.
- Identify opportunities to reduce unplanned downtime, improve equipment reliability, and increase maintenance efficiency.
- Encourage technicians to identify and communicate opportunities for improvement.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives involving equipment, processes, maintenance practices, and workplace organization.
- Evaluate opportunities to improve preventive maintenance strategies and extend equipment life.
- Support efforts to improve overall equipment effectiveness and manufacturing performance.
Facilities & Support Equipment
- Oversee maintenance and repair activities related to facility systems and support equipment as assigned.
- Coordinate response to facility-related maintenance issues that impact safety, production, or operations.
- Coordinate with outside service providers or contractors when specialized maintenance or repair support is required.
- Ensure outside contractors follow applicable company safety requirements and established procedures.
Communication & Administration
- Maintain clear and timely communication with Production, Engineering, Quality, and management regarding maintenance priorities and equipment status.
- Conduct or participate in shift handoffs to ensure open maintenance issues and critical equipment concerns are effectively communicated.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and equipment histories.
- Ensure maintenance activities are properly documented and closed out.
- Escalate significant equipment failures, safety concerns, resource constraints, or production risks to appropriate leadership.
- Provide management with information regarding maintenance performance, recurring issues, staffing needs, and equipment concerns.

Physical & Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily in a manufacturing environment around machinery, production equipment, tools, noise, and varying temperatures.
- Requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work around manufacturing equipment.
- Must be able to safely handle tools, equipment components, and materials as required to perform maintenance activities.
- May require response to urgent equipment or facility issues during scheduled working hours and, when necessary, outside normal hours.

Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree, trade certification, or equivalent technical education preferred.
- 5+ years of industrial or manufacturing maintenance experience.
- Previous experience leading or supervising maintenance personnel.
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and hydraulic/pneumatic diagrams.
- Experience troubleshooting industrial machinery and production equipment.
- Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance needs in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- Ability and willingness to work hands-on alongside Maintenance Technicians.
Preferred
- Experience in precision machining or aerospace/defense manufacturing.
- Experience troubleshooting CNC equipment such as Mazak, HAAS, Robert E. Morse, or similar equipment.
- Experience with PLCs, ladder logic, machine controls, automation, or robotics.
- Experience with preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Experience using a CMMS or computerized maintenance management system.
- Technical certification in electrical, mechanical, industrial maintenance, controls, or a related field.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing or other continuous improvement methodologies.
