Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist - Hematology

Job Overview This position performs routine and special laboratory tests, coordinates the implementation of new procedures, and resolves day‑to‑day laboratory technical problems. The individual notifies the laboratory immediate supervisor or pathologist as appropriate. The role includes a supervisory responsibility for the department section, coordinating laboratory operations to ensure reliable patient testing and timely services. The position monitors laboratory‑specific performance improvement and quality control activities, exhibits knowledge of and adherence to institutional and departmental policies and procedures, assists the supervisor in maintaining compliance with accrediting/regulatory agency standards, and maintains confidentiality of patient‑related information at all times. Shift Hours Days Responsibilities Coordinate clinical competency in the section. Perform routine and special lab procedures. Maintain regulatory compliance and performance improvement. Assist and consult with the laboratory supervisor/director. Maintain competency and meet goals and objectives. Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including respecting privacy, introducing oneself, adapting explanation of services, requesting permissions, and communicating appropriately. Other related duties as required. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory agency requirements in the assignment area. Report any suspected unethical or questionable behaviors, patient privacy violations, or compliance concerns in accordance with the Compliance & Privacy Program. Provide timely, high‑quality service while managing stress to maintain a professional environment. Education Required: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science. Copy of transcript required. Work Experience Required: Four (4) years of experience, including at least one year of experience in the appropriate clinical laboratory section under a qualified director. If a technologist rotates in a general lab, the one‑year section experience must be documented. If no documentation of rotation, a signed letter from the laboratory medical director confirming competency is required. Preferred: Experience with advanced analytical skills necessary for analyzing complex data and troubleshooting equipment. Certifications Required: Current license in the state of practice (if applicable) and ASCP, AMT, or AAB certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist. Incumbents certified by ASCP on or after January 1, 2004 must complete the ASCP Certification Maintenance Program. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally. Proficiency with Windows applications and laboratory software packages. Strong interpersonal skills. Experience working in a controlled environment with safety measures to minimize exposure to chemicals, body fluids, bloodborne pathogens, etc. Advanced analytical skills for data collection, calculations, log maintenance, and laboratory computer operation. Judgmental skills to identify and solve problems and handle difficult situations. Stress management skills to maintain a professional atmosphere and provide quality service. Ability to work independently. Physical and Environmental Demands Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Duties require walking or standing, occasionally pushing or pulling arm or leg controls, and working at a production rate pace. The role involves routine exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, and hazardous medications or waste. Occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases exists.
