Job Title: Traveling Construction Safety ManagerJob Description

The Traveling Construction Safety Manager serves as the onsite safety leader for large, remote construction projects, with an initial focus on a major wastewater/biogas renewable plant construction in Burley, Idaho. This role starts in a work-from-home capacity until projects fully kick off, then transitions to a site-based position that may last 3–4 years. The Safety Manager implements and enforces the corporate safety program, ensures compliance with OSHA and project-specific requirements, and promotes a proactive safety culture through leadership, coaching, inspections, training, and continuous improvement. This is a salaried, exempt position with a workload typically exceeding 50 hours per week and includes eligibility for an annual bonus and per diem support while on assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and administer the corporate safety program on assigned construction projects, ensuring alignment with organizational standards and owner requirements.

  • Develop, maintain, and update Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs) tailored to project scope, hazards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Conduct pre-construction safety planning and hazard assessments to identify risks and define appropriate controls before work begins.

  • Ensure full compliance with OSHA regulations and applicable federal, state, and local safety requirements across all project activities.

  • Promote a culture of accountability, hazard recognition, and continuous improvement among employees and subcontractors.

  • Maintain a highly visible presence in the field, performing daily jobsite inspections to identify unsafe conditions and verify adherence to safety protocols.

  • Conduct routine safety audits of employees and subcontractors to verify compliance with safety policies and procedures.

  • Verify proper use and availability of required personal protective equipment (PPE) and enforce PPE standards throughout the site.

  • Monitor housekeeping and site organization to maintain safe, orderly work areas and reduce slip, trip, and fall hazards.

  • Observe work practices and intervene immediately when unsafe conditions or behaviors are identified, stopping work as needed.

  • Coordinate and track corrective actions until safety deficiencies are fully resolved and documented.

  • Review and approve Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) to ensure tasks are evaluated and controlled appropriately.

  • Participate in the development of Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) for complex or high-risk tasks.

  • Evaluate and oversee high-risk work activities, including confined space entry, lockout/tagout, crane and rigging operations, excavation and trenching, electrical work, hot work, working at heights, and work on energized systems.

  • Verify that all required permits and documentation for high-risk activities are completed and approved before work begins.

  • Respond promptly to workplace incidents and near misses, providing on-site support and initiating incident management processes.

  • Conduct thorough incident investigations and root cause analyses, documenting findings and recommending corrective and preventive actions.

  • Maintain accurate incident records and track corrective actions through completion to prevent recurrence.

  • Assist with workers' compensation reporting and related documentation as required by company policies.

  • Conduct comprehensive new-hire safety orientations to ensure all personnel understand site rules, hazards, and expectations.

  • Deliver weekly toolbox talks and other routine safety communications to reinforce key topics and address emerging risks.

  • Provide ongoing safety coaching and mentoring to field personnel, supervisors, and subcontractors.

  • Coordinate specialized safety training for high-risk activities, new procedures, or regulatory changes.

  • Verify employee qualifications and certifications, ensuring that personnel are properly trained and authorized for assigned tasks.

  • Promote continuous learning and professional development in safety practices throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Maintain OSHA-required documentation, including logs, records, and reports relevant to construction safety.

  • Conduct compliance inspections to verify adherence to regulatory requirements and company policies.

  • Maintain accurate training records and ensure that mandatory safety training is current for all project personnel.

  • Coordinate regulatory inspections with agencies and support project teams during owner or third-party audits.

  • Ensure subcontractor compliance with contractual safety requirements and hold subcontractors accountable for safety performance.

  • Maintain daily safety reports and track safety observations to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.

  • Prepare weekly and monthly project safety reports for project leadership and corporate stakeholders.

  • Maintain inspection records and document corrective actions taken in response to identified hazards.

  • Report project safety metrics to corporate leadership, providing clear analysis and recommendations.

  • Collaborate closely with project managers, construction managers, project engineers, superintendents, foremen, the corporate safety team, owners, engineers, and regulatory agencies.

  • Participate in project planning meetings and provide safety input during scheduling and work sequencing to minimize risk.

  • Lead by example in all safety-related behaviors and decisions, modeling the standards expected of others.

  • Build positive, trust-based relationships with field personnel to encourage open communication about safety concerns.

  • Encourage employee participation in safety initiatives, hazard reporting, and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Recognize and reinforce safe work practices to motivate ongoing adherence to safety standards.

  • Promote hazard reporting without fear of retaliation, ensuring that all workers feel comfortable raising safety issues.

  • Support and reinforce the organization’s commitment to a zero-incident workplace where every employee returns home safely each day.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of experience serving as an onsite safety manager on building construction projects.

  • Strong, practical knowledge of OSHA Construction Standards, specifically 29 CFR 1926.

  • Current OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety and Health certification.

  • Proven experience leading subcontractor safety efforts and holding subcontractors accountable for safety performance.

  • Demonstrated strength in incident investigation and root cause analysis, including documentation and corrective action planning.

  • Experience conducting safety training, toolbox talks, and field coaching for diverse construction teams.

  • Ability to work effectively in the field as a highly visible safety leader, building strong working relationships with project stakeholders.

  • Ability to respond quickly to incidents and near misses, manage investigations, and communicate findings clearly.

  • Strong organizational skills for maintaining documentation, training records, reports, and safety metrics.

  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with project managers, construction managers, engineers, superintendents, foremen, owners, and regulatory agencies.

  • Commitment to promoting a proactive safety culture and a zero-incident workplace on large, complex construction projects.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation is highly valued.

  • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) credential is a strong plus.

  • OSHA 500 certification (Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for the Construction Industry) is preferred.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in safety or a closely related field is preferred.

  • Ability to interpret construction drawings and project schedules is preferred.

  • Experience with wastewater, biogas, renewable energy, or other industrial plant construction projects is beneficial.

  • Experience coordinating with owners, engineers, and regulatory agencies during audits and inspections.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain site-specific safety plans and hazard analyses for complex projects.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to coach, mentor, and influence diverse teams in a remote project environment.

  • Willingness and ability to travel and remain on remote project sites for extended durations, potentially 3–4 years.
