Lateral Public Safety Dispatcher

SALARY RANGE Public Safety Dispatcher II: $36.95 – $51.73 per hour. Current base salary listed above does not include overtime pay. Under general supervision, Public Safety Dispatcher II are the first Fire Department personnel to receive requests for assistance for fire and medical 9‑1-1 emergencies. They evaluate the type of assistance needed, and dispatch appropriate public safety personnel by utilizing computerized 9‑1‑1 telephone system, computer‑aided dispatch system, computerized radio system, and related database and equipment. They perform related duties as assigned, work mandatory overtime, and return to work when ordered during heightened or peak emergency activity. Qualifications Minimum one year experience as a public safety dispatcher with another fire or police agency. Must have a calm and focused demeanor, be able to multitask, manage high‑stress situations, and communicate clearly with a diverse county population. Benefits Emergency Medical Dispatch premium pay: $85.24 bi‑weekly for qualified dispatchers. Night shift differential: 5% of base pay for eligible hours. Educational incentive (if applicable): 2.5% to 5% for Associates, Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees not required by classification. Bilingual incentive (if applicable): depending on MOA and needs. Responsibilities Receive 9‑1‑1 and other emergency calls, determine nature, location, priority, and enter information into the CAD system. Provide pre‑arrival medical and fire instructions to callers using established protocols. Simultaneously receive, keyboard, and transmit information to dispatch fire and medical resources, including aircraft, and coordinate multiple agency protocols. Coordinate communications between multiple units, agencies, and jurisdictions, including aircraft; monitor status of field units. Use system status management protocols to ensure optimal geographic coverage, monitor hospital and specialized unit diversion status. Operate specialized computer systems for incident reports, resource deployments, daily fire weather information via WIMS and IROC. Perform dispatch functions related to CAL‑OES Mutual Aid Operational Area Coordinator Dispatch Center and CAL‑FIRE Contract County Dispatch Center. Provide training for entry‑level dispatch staff (if required). Perform other duties as assigned. Required Experience and Education One year comparable to Public Safety Dispatcher I at a public safety agency. Experience must include operation of a CAD system, 9‑1‑1 telephone system, and radio dispatching. Special Requirements Willing and able to work in Camarillo, CA, secondarily at Moorpark, CA, and possibly at headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA. Willing to work mandatory overtime, often with very little notice. Willing to work minimum 12.5 hours or more per shift. Willing to work all required shifts, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and rotating days off. Willing to submit to pre‑employment background and psychological assessments. Highly Desired Qualifications Experience with IAED Emergency Medical Dispatch or similar EMD system. Experience with IAED Emergency Fire Dispatch or similar EFD system. Experience with Central Square CAD and VIPER phone systems. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to learn dispatching methods, operate various communications equipment, learn Fire and EMS equipment and capabilities, hear multiple conversations simultaneously, speak clearly and concisely over radio and telephone, type on keyboard while operating mouse and foot controls, prioritize tasks, make immediate decisions under stress, read and interpret complex maps, develop knowledge of Ventura County geography, apply rules and policies, and assess patient conditions for pre‑arrival instructions.
