Job Summary

Join our dynamic nursing team in Hilo, Hawaii, as a Medical Surgical Float Pool Registered Nurse. This role offers the opportunity to provide comprehensive patient care across various acute care units, including Medical, Surgical Acute (Laulima Unit), and occasionally the Cardiovascular Unit. You will be an integral part of a team dedicated to delivering high-quality care to a diverse patient population.

The Medical Unit manages approximately 77 beds with a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:8 on nights. The Surgical Acute (Laulima) Unit has 18 beds with a 1:6 ratio, and the Cardiovascular Unit has 15 beds with a 1:4 ratio. This float position requires adaptability and a broad skill set to manage varying patient acuities and departmental needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care to medical, surgical, and cardiovascular patients across multiple units.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, monitoring for effectiveness and adverse reactions.
• Perform various medical and surgical procedures relevant to the assigned unit.
• Document all patient care activities accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
• Collaborate with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.
• Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, and self-care.
• Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
• Adapt quickly to new unit environments, patient populations, and team dynamics.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting.
• Demonstrated proof of immunity; medical and religious exemption requests will not be accepted.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Procedural Sedation certification.
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification.
• Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification.

Skills & Competencies

• Proficiency with Meditech EMR system.
• Experience with Pyxis automated dispensing system.
• Competency in managing wound vacs and chest tubes.
• Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patient assignments effectively.
• Adaptability and flexibility to float between various medical and surgical units.
• Proficient in medication administration and patient monitoring.

Licensing Requirements
