Quantitative Regulatory Reporting Analyst

Full-time

Total Energies

Context & Environment

TotalEnergies Gas & Power North America, Inc. (TGPNA) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the TotalEnergies Group and is responsible for energy trading activities across the United States. The company actively participates in North American energy markets, managing and optimizing a diverse portfolio of commodities.

This position is based in Houston, Texas and is located on the trading floor. The Houston Trading Division is responsible for optimizing the purchase and sale of natural gas, power, LNG, CO₂ emissions, and dry bulk commodities across global markets, while ensuring alignment with Group trading policies, risk frameworks, and commercial objectives.

The Analyst will join the Regulatory Reporting team and report directly to the Regulatory Reporting Team Leader. In this role, the successful candidate will support regulatory reporting activities, contribute to compliance and risk control processes, and help ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of reporting requirements in a fast-paced trading environment.

This role operates within the highly volatile and fast-paced U.S. energy and commodities markets, requiring the ability to analyze complex, data-intensive opportunities that support business growth and new commercial initiatives. The position works closely with trading, risk, finance, and compliance teams, providing time-sensitive analysis that informs both strategic and commercial decision-making. Success in this role requires thriving in a dynamic trading environment where activities are often time-critical and directly impact business performance. The team is responsible for managing the company's gas, power, dry bulk, and LNG trading and marketing activities across North America.

Activities

The jobholder will actively monitor regulatory and risk mitigation activities and ensure that the controls in place are up to date, adapted, and appropriate to the activity and the current regulatory practices. Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure trading operations comply with all applicable financial and physical market regulations, including those issued by the CFTC, FERC, EIA, ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, CAISO, WECC, ONRR, PUCT, and other relevant Public Utility Commissions.
  • Develop, enhance, and monitor risk metrics designed to measure and manage exposures in accordance with regulatory requirements and market practices.
  • Ensure the relevance, accuracy, integrity, and reliability of risk and regulatory reporting tools throughout their design, implementation, maintenance, and output validation processes.
  • Design, improve, and automate business processes using Business Intelligence and data analytics tools to enhance efficiency, transparency, and control effectiveness.
  • Support risk management activities by analyzing exchange and OTC market requirements, implementing and maintaining regulatory and risk models such as SPAN, SIMM, and Monte Carlo methodologies, and providing exposure analysis through scenario testing, stress testing, and forecasting.
  • Partner closely with Trading, Risk, Middle Office, and Back Office teams to provide quantitative insights that support portfolio optimization and commercial decision-making, including price shock and market exposure analyses.
  • Analyze and classify transactions in accordance with CFTC Substantial Position and counterparty reporting requirements while maintaining a strong understanding of portfolio and market dynamics.
  • Develop and maintain automated reporting and analytical solutions using tools such as Python, Alteryx, Power BI, and other data visualization platforms.
  • Maintain and validate market regulation models, ensuring their accuracy, consistency, and compliance with regulatory expectations.
  • Reconcile regulatory model outputs with external counterparties and exchanges as required, investigating and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and ongoing support to business stakeholders regarding changes in market regulations, exchange rules, and reporting obligations that impact trading activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across global offices, including Houston, Geneva, Paris, and Singapore, to ensure consistent interpretation and application of regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare, review, and submit regulatory reports accurately and on time, while monitoring regulator feedback, addressing inquiries, and implementing improvements as needed.
TGPNA operates in highly volatile and dynamic energy markets where significant market exposures must be continuously monitored, managed, and controlled. Trading activities are subject to a complex regulatory framework, with requirements established by federal, state, and market authorities. As a result, the Regulatory Reporting team plays a critical role in understanding regulatory obligations, identifying changes that impact trading activities, and ensuring ongoing compliance across the organization.

Key regulatory authorities governing TGPNA activities include:
  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
  • Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)
  • Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT)
  • Energy Information Administration (EIA)
  • Independent System Operators (ISOs), including ERCOT, PJM, SPP, MISO, and CAISO
  • Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC)
The Analyst will work in a high-impact environment, supporting the Regulatory Reporting team in adapting risk control frameworks, processes, and analytical tools to evolving financial and physical market regulations. This role requires developing a strong understanding of federal, state, and local trading regulations, identifying regulatory changes that affect business activities, and ensuring compliance across energy trading operations.

In addition, the Analyst will contribute to the development and enhancement of quantitative and predictive models that support risk management, regulatory reporting, and commercial decision-making across energy portfolios. Success in this role requires the ability to navigate a complex and rapidly evolving market environment characterized by regulatory change, market volatility, and increasing business demands, while contributing to strategic initiatives in a growing organization.

The position offers extensive exposure to North American trade reporting regulations and provides the opportunity to work closely with Front Office, Middle Office, Back Office, Risk, and Finance teams. The successful candidate will play an active role in ensuring that operational results are accurate, compliant, and aligned with regulatory requirements, while helping maintain controls, processes, and reporting frameworks that are effective, up to date, and appropriately tailored to the company's trading activities.
