CNC Machinist and Programmer

Job Description

This role combines hands-on CNC machining with on-the-floor programming to produce high-precision aerospace and defense components in an R&D and low-volume manufacturing environment. You will interpret complex blueprints, set up and operate mills and lathes, and write and adjust CNC programs using Mastercam and Solidworks to achieve tight dimensional tolerances in demanding materials. The position requires a strong mechanical aptitude, an eye for detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to deliver high-quality parts on time.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints and job routers to achieve tight dimensional tolerances on complex aerospace hardware.
• Write, edit, and adjust CNC programs at the machine using Mastercam and Solidworks to optimize part quality and cycle time.
• Set up CNC mills and lathes using a variety of tooling, including soft and hard jaws, collet chucks, and specialty fixtures.
• Machine and deliver high-quality parts in challenging aerospace materials such as Hastelloy, Inconel, and 17-4 PH.
• Program and fine-tune feeds, speeds, and depth of cut to align with material specifications and tooling guidelines.
• Measure and inspect finished parts using CMM, calipers, bore gauges, pins, and micrometers before releasing them for the next operation or shipment.
• Identify, stage, and organize tooling in advance of each setup to minimize machine downtime and improve throughput.
• Collaborate closely with Manufacturing to troubleshoot issues, develop accurate time estimates, and design creative fixturing solutions.
• Maintain accurate ERP documentation and time entry to support reliable scheduling and job tracking.
• Operate and perform changeovers on CNC machines and related equipment, including mills, lathes, and grinders, as required to support production.

Essential Skills

• 35+ years of machinist experience in an R&D or low-volume manufacturing environment, with aerospace experience strongly preferred.
• Proficiency with CNC machines, including mills and lathes, and experience performing setups and changeovers.
• Hands-on experience writing and adjusting CNC programs at the machine, using Mastercam and Solidworks.
• Solid working knowledge of G and M code programming, including experience with Mastercam and/or NX.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and job routers to meet tight dimensional tolerances.
• Comfort working with demanding aerospace materials such as Hastelloy, Inconel, and 17-4 PH.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to solve problems creatively under tight tolerances and deadlines.
• Experience using precision measurement tools, including CMM, calipers, bore gauges, pins, and micrometers.
• Comfortable working across conventional and CNC machines, with familiarity using welding equipment.
• Self-directed work style with the ability to deliver under pressure and meet customer and internal deadlines.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating and programming 3-axis and 5-axis machining centers for both small and large parts.
• Familiarity with Okuma CNC machines and related controls.
• Experience with grinders and other secondary machining equipment.
• Strong documentation habits for ERP systems and production tracking.
• Comfort collaborating with cross-functional Manufacturing teams on fixturing and process improvements.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean, well-organized shop equipped with brand-new machines dedicated to aerospace and defense work in an R&D-focused setting. You will work primarily on mill and lathe machine centers, including 3-axis and 5-axis machines, producing both small and large parts. The environment emphasizes precision, quality, and experimentation to support low-volume and prototype work. The position is on first shift with flexible start and end times, offering some adaptability to individual scheduling needs. You will work with advanced CNC technologies, including Mastercam, Solidworks, and modern CNC controls, in a facility that supports both conventional and CNC machining, as well as welding and grinding operations.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $45.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
