Chief Financial Officer (CFO)The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) seeks an entrepreneurial and forward-looking financial executive to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This is a distinctive opportunity for a hands-on strategist to lead within a complex financial environment, strengthen the systems and practices that support a nationally recognized membership organization, and translate financial insight into sound decisions and sustainable mission impact.Founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the DAR is a nonprofit, nonpolitical women's service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Today, the organization includes nearly 200,000 members across 3,000 chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and locations around the world. The Society is led by the President General and an Executive Committee of 11 National Officers. Approximately 150 staff members and a $37 million operating budget support programs that encourage historical research and publication, preserve historic relics and documents, advance education, and promote patriotic endeavors.Reporting to the Executive Director and working in close partnership with the Treasurer General, the CFO will serve as a trusted advisor to executive and committee leadership on organizational strategy, financial planning, risk, and stewardship. The CFO will lead the full range of financial operations, from accounting policy and internal controls to budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audit, cash management, investments, and financial systems. The CFO will also oversee grant accounting and reporting and ensure that net assets with and without donor restrictions are accurately classified, tracked, and reported. The successful candidate will bring the judgment and discipline required for a complex financial environment, along with an entrepreneurial mindset and a genuine appetite for building. This leader will identify opportunities, modernize infrastructure, and translate strategy into practical execution. The CFO will balance long-term vision with a willingness to work alongside the team and engage directly in execution when needed.The CFO will oversee a multifaceted financial portfolio with revenue streams that include membership dues, grants, endowments, events, merchandise, magazine subscriptions, and charitable contributions. They will maintain strong internal controls and partner across the organization to strengthen data governance, compliance, and operational effectiveness. Key responsibilities include:Serve as the organization's senior financial strategist, advising the Executive Director, Treasurer General, executive leadership, and relevant committees on financial performance, opportunities, tradeoffs, risk, and long-range sustainability.Lead annual and multiyear financial planning, including operating and capital budgets, scenario analysis, forecasting, cash-flow planning, and the development of decision-ready financial models.Translate complex financial information into clear, timely, and actionable guidance for leaders with varying levels of financial expertise.Partner with department heads to establish realistic budgets, monitor performance, anticipate variances, and adjust plans as organizational needs and priorities evolve.Ensure that the DAR's transactions, accounting policies, and financial statements are accurate, timely, and prepared in accordance with GAAP and applicable FASB requirements.Oversee monthly and annual close processes, the general ledger, account reconciliations, revenue recognition, expense allocation, grant accounting and compliance, funder reporting, and the consolidation of financial information.Prepare and oversee regulatory and tax reporting, including Form 990, Form 990-T, and D-20 filings, and coordinate with external tax and legal advisors as appropriate.Lead the annual external audit, including preparation of accurate schedules, coordination of staff and auditor requests, timely resolution of findings, and implementation of recommended improvements.Oversee the processing, reconciliation, and reporting of member donations and other contributed revenue, ensuring that financial and reporting obligations are met.Provide strategic ownership of the organization's financial technology environment, ensuring that systems, data, and workflows support accurate reporting, efficient operations, and sound decision-making.Lead the continued modernization of the finance function, including chart-of-accounts design and the implementation and optimization of NetSuite, Concur, and related platforms and integrations.Evaluate current workflows and introduce scalable processes, automation, dashboards, and controls that reduce manual effort, improve data quality, and strengthen the internal customer experience.Lead, coach, and develop a team of five accounting professionals, establishing clear priorities, roles, performance expectations, and opportunities for growth.Create an environment that values collaboration, service, continuous improvement, and constructive problem-solving.Model sound judgment, discretion, responsiveness, and a willingness to engage in both strategic leadership and hands-on problem-solving.The DAR uses MIP for accounting and Concur for workflow. As the organization advances a chart of accounts to transition to Net Suite, the CFO will have the opportunity to advance the department's systems and improve processes and procedures.The ideal candidate is a strategic and entrepreneurial financial leader with deep technical expertise, strong execution skills, and the ability to build trust across a complex, mission-driven organization. Competitive candidates will bring:At least 10 years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience, including director-level responsibility and meaningful management or supervisory experience.Strong experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, financial modeling, internal controls, audit, tax and regulatory compliance, and executive-level reporting.Demonstrated success leading financial strategy and operations in a complex environment with multiple revenue streams, stakeholder groups, funds, entities, programs, or lines of business.Extensive knowledge of GAAP, FASB requirements, and nonprofit tax and accounting rules and regulations.Demonstrated success improving systems, processes, and technology platforms, and leading initiatives from concept through implementation.Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex financial matters clearly and work effectively with executives, staff, volunteer leaders, committees, and external partners.The ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, adapt to change, exercise sound judgment, and solve problems with rigor and creativity.A bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field.An active CPA license required.The CFO is expected to work alongside the team at the DAR's Washington, D.C. headquarters three days per week.The salary range for this position is $270,000 to $280,000, commensurate with experience.
