Overview University Correctional Health Care (UCHC), operating within Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, provides physical, mental health, dental and sex offender treatment services to individuals involved in the criminal justice system in New Jersey. UCHC manages a $150 million budget and employs approximately 1,000 staff. Posting Summary Rutgers is seeking a Supervising Physician for Northern State Prison located in Newark, NJ. The position provides medical services to inmates consistent with community Standards of Care, offers clinical supervision to physicians and nurse practitioners, and serves as liaison for clinical matters with external providers. The physician will also be available for on‑call services. Duties Provide clinical and professional supervision, management, and monitoring of physicians and nurse practitioners/physician assistants assigned to the State Prison. Oversee clinical work by conducting regular peer reviews of documentation, medication usage, and consult request patterns. Host quarterly meetings to review CQI issues, policies, and problems. Participate in annual performance evaluations of physicians and nurse practitioners. Work with the Medical Director and regional nurse managers to develop and maintain appropriate medical services within the State Prison. Assist in developing and implementing UCHC policies and procedures. Participate in the continuous quality improvement program, including corrective action plans, continuing medical education, and development of best‑practice algorithms/models. Participate in preparation for health‑care reviews such as National Commission of Correctional Health Care inspections. Perform routine administrative functions and organizational responsibilities. Maintain a monthly provider clinic schedule for the State Prison and ensure timely communication with medical and mental‑health staff. Approve time‑off requests, review timesheets, and monitor paid time off in accordance with attendance policies. Ensure adherence to all Rutgers, UCHC, and NJDOC conduct and policies, including dress codes and attendance requirements. Document progressive discipline for physicians and nurse practitioners and collaborate with the Medical Director on terminations when necessary. Qualifications Licensed physician in the State of New Jersey with current DEA registration, CDS, and CPR certifications. Board Certified and qualified by state laws/regulations to practice medicine. Experience in a primary‑care specialty. Valid driver’s license; possess own vehicle or alternative transportation to the prison site. Excellent communication skills for interacting with upper management and staff. Interpersonal skills suitable for a service environment; ability to present information to patients, inmates, and staff. Ability to speak effectively before diverse groups, including management and public audiences. Offer Information Salary: Minimum $33,235 – Mid‑range $227,332 – Maximum $421,428 (Exempt, Grade MD).
