Assistant Vice President, Total Rewards

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Human Resources, the Assistant Vice President, Total Rewards (AVP, Total Rewards) leads a team of specialists and consultants, overseeing strategy and operations for university-wide staff compensation, executive compensation, and benefits. The role designs and implements new total rewards strategies, policies, and programs, reviews existing offerings, and recommends changes aligned with university values and strategic goals. This position is hybrid preferred (on-site two days per week). Remote candidates willing to travel and work in person at least one week per month at Stanford’s Redwood City campus may be considered. Core Duties Manage ongoing total rewards operations while leading a multi‑year evolution of the compensation function. Build and manage relationships with senior leaders and foster effective communication. Design and implement market‑based compensation and benefits programs competitive within the higher education market. Lead job architecture, job evaluation, leveling, and develop user‑friendly guidelines and communication tools. Oversee executive compensation design, monitoring, and solution development. Analyze market data to recommend pay structures and market‑competitive solutions. Manage total rewards program costs and annual spend against budget while maintaining engaging programs. Support the annual university budget process with financial analysis. Develop special programs such as rewards and recognition initiatives. Maintain compliance with state and federal regulations governing tax‑qualified benefit programs, including audits and filing of annual plan forms. Ensure compliance with Fair Labor Standards Act, pay equity and pay transparency regulations, and related reporting. Drive continuous improvement and operational excellence in total rewards. Minimum Requirements Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of relevant experience. Preferred certifications: CEBS, ISCEBS, PHR/SPHR, CCP/CBP or equivalent. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong relationship‑building acumen in a highly matrixed environment; ability to navigate and influence change. Experience ideating, setting, articulating, and overseeing a total rewards vision and long‑term projects. Proven experience managing a team of compensation and benefits specialists and establishing high‑quality customer service standards. Experience managing large‑scale budgets for compensation and benefits programs and assessing ROI. Subject‑matter knowledge of compensation and benefits philosophy, theory, market‑based pay structures, FLSA, pay equity, and higher education governance. Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing compensation and benefits (e.g., FLSA, ACA, ERISA, HIPAA, FMLA, IRS). Background implementing HRIS compensation modules. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong planning and organizational skills with effective time‑management abilities. Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel, and data visualization. Ability to exercise discretion with confidential information. Physical Requirements Frequently stand, walk, sit, use a computer, telephone, and perform fine manipulation. Occasionally twist, bend, stoop, squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull up to 20 pounds, write by hand, sort/file paperwork. Rarely kneel or crawl. Working Conditions Occasional work on evenings and weekends. Work Standards Interpersonal skills: works well with Stanford colleagues, clients, and external organizations. Promote culture of safety: demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and safety. Compliance with all applicable University policies and procedures. Pay Range: $280,000 to $315,000 per annum.
