Brief Description of Duties The Department of Art and Art History at San José State University is searching for part‑time faculty to encourage critical thinking and iterative concept development within class assignments. Candidates are expected to have a contemporary, experimental art practice and to contribute to curriculum development. The selected candidate may teach courses in one or more of the following areas: Contemporary Issues in Photography, Studio Lighting courses, Beginning and Digital Photography, Color Photography, Image and Idea, Black and White Photography, Digital Imaging, Advanced Photography, and Advanced Photographic Media. Department lecturers are required to participate in 1‑2 faculty meetings each semester and provide assessment data. Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement. Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System. Ensure all classes meet as scheduled throughout the semester in the mode assigned. Required Qualifications Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography. A clear demonstration of artistic achievement, evidenced by a current record of significant exhibitions that include photo‑based media. Teaching experience at the university level. Impressive portfolio of creative photo‑based work. Strong writing skills and ability to direct and assess student writing within a studio class. Expert level proficiency in both digital and darkroom photographic practices, contemporary equipment, materials, and chemistry, Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and familiarity with Epson printers and software. For Studio Lighting courses, relevant teaching experience and knowledge of lighting equipment with a digital workflow. Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population. Preferred Qualifications Teaching experience at the university level with at least two years of photographic teaching experience. Compensation Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. Anticipated starting salary: L‑A / Range 2: $5,507 - $5,959 per month L‑B / Range 3: $6,221 - $7,481 per month L‑C / Range 4: $6,825 - $9,431 per month L‑D / Range 5: $8,593 - $10,347 per month Part‑time rates are prorated.
