Summary About the Position: Serves as the Safety & Occupational Health Specialist for the Operational Support Airlift Activity (OSA-A) at Fort Belvoir, VA. Responsibilities Plan and organize continuous assignments in the development of safety program content, standards, procedures, and techniques to provide safety services. Responsible for the Standard Army Safety and Occupational Health Inspection (SASOHI) Program. Provide technical leadership and guidance to the ARNG Fixed Wing Detachments and Aviation Safety Officer’s (ASO). Plan and conduct periodic Aviation Resource Management Surveys of ARNG Fixed Wing safety programs and facilities. Initiate and carry out safety education activities by promoting safety awareness through safety councils and committees, safety stand down days. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: GS 11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assist with managing safety or occupational health program elements; assist with providing safety training briefings; and assist with implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and/or occupational illnesses. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09). GS 12 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conduct aviation accident investigations; design or modify workplaces, processes, products, or other systems to control or eliminate hazards; and develop and/or recommend safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Because of the essential nature of this position, shall require that it NOT be filled by members of the National Guard, Ready Reservists or military retirees with recall obligations to preclude such position from being vacated during a mobilization. This is a Mission Essential position: If this area experiences severe weather conditions that result in the installation being closed for normal business operations, you are still required to report for or remain on duty to maintain infrastructure operations, health, safety, and security.
