Departmental Overview

The Department of Astronomy is one of four academic departments in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division. In Astronomy we learn and teach the secrets of the Universe through high-tech experiments, state-of-the-art observations, intensive computation, deep thought, and innovative educational and outreach experiences. It is our mission to do so in an environment that is welcoming and inclusive. Additionally, the department is home to the Theoretical Astrophysics Center, and programmatically closely associated with the Radio Astronomy Lab.

This position provides local embedded IT support with specialized knowledge of departmental systems and needs. Responsible for IT expertise across systems, networking, and user support to design, implement, and maintain departmental technology solutions. Provides comprehensive technical support to faculty, staff, and students while managing Linux-based systems, servers, firewalls, and network infrastructure, including specialized lab environments. The position develops and automates systems through scripting and programming, ensures security and disaster recovery readiness, and leads technical troubleshooting across hardware, software, and audiovisual systems. Serving as a key liaison, it collaborates with campus IT, vendors, and departmental stakeholders to deliver reliable, secure, and efficient technology services.

Responsibilities

• Applies IT concepts to perform complex analyses and functions from multiple IT areas of specialization. Defines, designs and implements network communications and solutions. Implements related business processes.
• Provide timely and thoughtful local technical support to faculty, staff, and students for hardware and software issues. Provide local support for campus services such as VPN, Wi-Fi, Ethernet.
• Manage local printer access.
• Assist faculty and instructors with classroom and instructional technology. Act as liaison between local users and campus IT support teams. Design and configuration of network topology for the unit including a private subnet for the Undergraduate Astronomy Lab.
• Maintain Linux-based network of computers for undergraduate lab courses. Configure and maintains departmental firewalls incuding control access to networked system. Maintain department servers and select workstations.
• Analyzes complex programs or formulates logic for new systems. Automate existing manual system workflows.
• Performs coding and tests/debugs complex programs. Initiates and designs conversion and system
  implementation plans. Prepares programming documentation.
• Write Linux/UNIX shell and python scripts to perform account maintenance and other tasks.
• Maintains local server room and server hardware including network attached storage.
• Maintains and develops security configurations for servers and the department website. Resolves campus network security notifications.
• Design and implementation of computing disaster recovery plan and interface it with the Business Resumption Plan of the unit.
• Analyzes, installs, modifies and supports operating systems and application software.
• Analyzes and implements LAN and/or WAN system projects.
• Analyzes business problems to be solved with automated systems.
• May recommend changes in development, maintenance and system standards; train users in conversion and implementation of system.
• Provides support to the department in other roles, such as communications (mainly updating and reconfiguring the department website and visual displays; monitoring and coordinates digital accessibility of the website).
• Provides support for updates of the website content by department personnel audio visual support. Debugs networked audiovisual system issues and corrects them.
• Acts as a liaison and subject matter expert with campus and outside vendors for IT and AV related tasks.
• Maintains department listservs.
• Recommends computing equipment.
• Collaborates with the department engineer for Leuschner Observatory IT needs.
• Upgrades technical skills as new features and modules of campus systems become available. Maintains professional knowledge and stays current with related policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Experience maintaining computer server hardware: replacing storage drives, fans, power supplies.
• Experience maintaining network firewall and router NAT configurations.
• Experience with Network Attached Storage server and client (Linux, MacOS) configuration.
• Working knowledge of TCP/IP networking, network security, Wi-Fi, Ethernet.
• Knowledge of commonly used applications in Astronomy and its related fields including Python, Astropy and IDL.
• Experience with multiple computer operating systems, with emphasis on Linux (Ubuntu, RHEL, OpenSUSE) and MacOS.
• Advanced knowledge of IT security best practices and policies, including demonstrated experience securing server-based software.
• Has thorough knowledge, skills and abilities associated with identifying systems-related issues and actions needed to improve or correct performance.
• Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
• Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
• Skills to adapt equipment and technology to serve user needs.
• Has knowledge of applications programming technologies, tools and protocols.
• Has skills necessary to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
• Ability to communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner among varying levels in the organization.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $91,500 to $125,000 yearly ($7,625 to $10,416.67 monthly); the full salary range for this payroll title (INFO SYS ANL 3) is $91,500 to $168,900 yearly. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits. This position is FLSA Exempt and paid monthly.
