Job Description

The physician practices in the General Medicine Service (GMS) to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. The physician provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management. The physician practices to the full extent of their education, training, and certification. Core functions are outlined in the clinical privileges that correspond with this position. The physician has prescriptive authority for a panel of patients or program as indicated by their position. The physician is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence-based care for a population of patients.

Major duties and responsibilities of the position include:

• Independently manages clinical care of patients with acute and chronic health conditions with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention using evidence-based practice via telephone, video, face to face visits and asynchronous care.
• Develops and implements an individualized plan to achieve optimal panel population health and disease management.
• Demonstrates leadership and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.
• Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies.
• Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
• Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services.
• Provides education to patients and their families.
• Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
• Performs procedures as trained and approved by clinical privileges.
• Provides clinical guidance to mid-level providers.

• The incumbent will engage in population health and quality improvement efforts related to care of Veterans within the bounds of state law as defined by the board of professional licensure.
• The incumbent will take part in continuing medical education (as defined by licensure), and quality assurance activities.
• Responsible for coordinating with providers within their own and outside of their own Service Line, at the other divisions within the EKHCS structure and the CBOPs as determined by the plan of care for the veteran. Open, clear, and collaborative engagements are a key duty. Incumbent is ultimately responsible to ensure barriers for Veterans and staff are minimized to promote a positive work environment. Fosters positive working relationships with staff, peers and Veterans.
