Public Safety Officer

Job Summary This position focuses on preventing workplace accidents and promoting health and safety awareness within the hospital. The role includes protecting hospital assets, conducting patrols, responding to security incidents, and providing crisis support. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Valid state‑issued driver’s license. Possess IAHSS Basic certification as a Healthcare Security Officer within 1 year of hire. Preferred Qualifications Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field. Experience in military, security, or police. Security or first‑responder certifications (de‑escalation/crisis response, CPR/AED, Stop the Bleed, Nasal Naloxone, etc.). Graduate of an approved law‑enforcement training program or Police Academy with a valid POST Certification from the Commonwealth of MA. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid MA License to Carry Firearms. Duties and Responsibilities Perform basic public safety and security duties, including internal and external patrols. Respond to routine and emergency calls, building alarms, and containment of violent patients or visitors. Screen vendors, visitors, and employees entering the facility; monitor for suspicious activity. Provide escorts to patients, visitors, and staff. Identify and mitigate security vulnerabilities and safety hazards; report deficiencies via incident reports or work orders. Manage patient crisis interventions, using least‑invasive measures and de‑escalation strategies. Ensure all hospital personnel have visible identification badges; grant access to authorized areas. Maintain composure in stressful situations; use trained intervention skills. Deliver exceptional customer service to patients, visitors, and staff. Participate in investigations, conduct interviews, review video, prepare case files, and secure evidence. Assist in emergencies and disasters (crowd control, evacuations). Resolve problems impartially by gathering facts. Complete accurate incident reports and comply with procedures. Submit training requirements and courses as directed. Physical Requirements Frequent standing and walking for up to eight hours; ability to climb stairs. Lift up to 50 pounds alone. Wear personal protective equipment as required. Work long, irregular, and odd hours; may require overtime and holdovers. Exposure to hazardous materials, radioactive substances, and various environments. Skills and Abilities Proficient in English communication, reading, and writing. Basic computer skills. Ability to multi‑task and meet deadlines. Rapid assessment and decision‑making in potentially dangerous situations. Emotional maturity, dependability, punctuality, diplomacy, tact, poise, self‑confidence, and positivity.
