Position Title: Secondary Health Teacher Salary Range: $40,000.00 - $70,000.00 Reports To: Secondary Instructional Leader Status: Exempt, Full-Time 40+ hours a week Contract Type: 10 month contract (follows school calendar) Paid over 12 months ABOUT THIS At HOPE, the Secondary Health Teacher plays a vital role in shaping students' understanding of their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This position is grounded in the belief that health literacy is foundational to student success and lifelong flourishing. The Health Teacher creates a rigorous, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment where secondary students in grades 6 12 feel safe to explore and discuss health topics with honesty, curiosity, and respect. Under the direction of the Secondary Instructional Leader, the Health Teacher plans, delivers, and assesses standards-aligned instruction across health education topics including physical health, mental and emotional wellness, nutrition, human development, disease prevention, substance abuse prevention, and personal safety. The teacher works collaboratively with school nurses, counselors, and community health partners to support the holistic needs of HOPE's diverse student body. The Health Teacher brings cultural awareness and sensitivity to every lesson, recognizing the diverse backgrounds and lived experiences of HOPE's students and families. This role is essential in building a school community where scholars develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make healthy, informed decisions throughout their lives. PRIMARY DUTIES Compliance and Regulations. Curriculum and Instruction. Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, standards-aligned health education lesson plans and instructional materials for grades 6 12. Address topics including physical health, mental and emotional wellness, nutrition, human development, disease prevention, substance abuse prevention, and personal safety. Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Assessment and Data. Evaluate student performance through examinations, projects, presentations, and assignments to promote achievement in health literacy. Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress and development. Provide timely, meaningful feedback to students and prepare required reports on student performance and activities. Classroom Environment. Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment in which students feel comfortable discussing sensitive health topics. Implement consistent classroom management practices in alignment with HOPE's disciplinary systems and PBIS framework. Assess student academic and behavioral needs and enforce school rules and procedures specific to the health education setting. Cultural Responsiveness. Incorporate culturally responsive teaching practices that recognize and honor the diverse languages, identities, and lived experiences of HOPE's students and families. Adapt health content and instructional approaches to be affirming and relevant to Hmong, Karen, and other multilingual learners. Student and Family Engagement. Communicate proactively with parents and guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress in health education. Clearly communicate assessment criteria and involve families in meaningful ways to maximize student learning and health awareness. Identify student needs and collaborate with school nurses, counselors, and other professional staff in addressing health, wellness, and learning concerns. Professional Growth and Collaboration. Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development programs, health education workshops, and curriculum development meetings. Stay current with adolescent health trends, research, and best practices. Collaborate with grade-level teachers, school health professionals, paraprofessionals, and community health partners as appropriate. Serve as a role model for promoting healthy lifestyles, effective instruction, and professionalism. School-wide Participation. Participate in school events, staff meetings, and extracurricular activities. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Secondary Instructional Leader or other appropriate administrator. - B.A./B.S. degree in Health Education, Physical Education, Public Health, or a related field from an accredited institution is required. A Master's degree in education is highly desirable.
- A minimum of one (1) year of teaching experience in health education or a related field is preferred. Student teaching experience accepted.
- Minnesota State Licensure in Health Education for grades 5 12 (or appropriate secondary teaching licensure) is required.
- Strong knowledge of adolescent health, development, and age-appropriate health education pedagogy, including the ability to address sensitive topics with care and professionalism.
- Knowledge of Minnesota Academic Standards for Health Education and state health education requirements. Experience with culturally responsive instruction and strategies for supporting Hmong, Karen, and other multilingual learners.
- Experience with EDUClimber, FASTBridge, or similar student data platforms is preferred.
- Experience with Hmong language programs, bilingual education, or multilingual learner programming is preferred.
- Strong instructional planning, classroom management, and curriculum development skills with an ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners.
- Deep commitment to educational equity, cultural responsiveness, and HOPE's mission and strategic priorities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively about sensitive health topics with students, families, and staff.
- Ability to interact effectively with scholars, families, and staff of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Proficiency in using computer and multimedia technology to support instruction.
