Job Description
Registered Nurse (RN)

About the Unit

This unit features a comprehensive range of services and support for mothers and newborns, including:

9 Labor and Delivery Rooms
2 OB Operating Rooms
2 OB Post Anesthesia Care Units (PACU)
11 Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds
4 Pediatric beds
20 Mother/Baby beds
18 bed START unit for Perinatal Addiction
3 OB Emergency Department beds (20 weeks and above)

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

Care is provided for a variety of patients, including:

Level II Perinatal Center - 32 weeks and above
Hypertension and magnesium administration
Medication management for substance abuse
Low-risk patients needing intermittent monitoring, epidurals, and fetal monitoring
Antepartum care for those requiring continuous fetal monitoring
Post-labor stable patients transitioning to the Mother/Baby unit

Expect approximately 175-200 deliveries each month.

Patient Ratios

Adhere to AWHONN and NANN guidelines:

1:1 for active labor
1:2 for non-active laboring patients

Qualifications

Required certifications and skills include:

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
Fetal monitoring certification (AWHONN or equivalent module)
Strong Labor and Delivery experience, including cervical exams, antepartum and labor care, amnio infusion, epidurals, fetal monitoring, intravenous (IV) therapy, and administration of Pitocin
Post-partum care experience for both mother and baby, and basic breastfeeding support
Comfortable with couplet care once mother and baby are stable
Experience with HUGS Security system and Pyxis medication dispensing

Department Support

The department offers significant support through:

Availability of surgery technicians during weekdays (M-F)
Access to phlebotomy services
NICU attendings for patients 34 weeks or less, as needed
Respiratory therapy services available 24/7 for high-risk deliveries
Hospitalists and OB group coverage around the clock
Laborist OB/GYN services available 24/7
Midwife and Family Practice Group support
Telemetry monitoring capabilities

Unit Orientation

Orientation includes:

Initial education on department operations
Two distinct shifts: one focused on patients who are delivering, and the other on C-sections and triage
Completion of annual core competencies (e.g., HIPAA, OSHA), medication exams, and unit competency assessments prior to beginning

Scheduling

Details regarding the scheduling process include:

Weekend rotation required every other week
Holiday expectations include one major and one minor holiday
Requests for time off must be approved through the manager
Shift times are either 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
Schedules are created in 3-week increments
