Bard College, a liberal arts college on the Hudson River, is aprivate institution working in the public interest. Bard College is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor . Thefull-time Academic Advisor is a member of the Office of Equity& Inclusion staff and is responsible for directly supportingthe undergraduate and graduate students who receive scholarshipsunder the Center for Indigenous Studies (CfIS) and opportunityprograms supporting Indigenous students. With a mission to nurturepublic programming focused on education, liberal arts, and advocacyin Native American and Indigenous Studies, CfIS offers scholarshipsto undergraduate and graduate students from any of the 574federally recognized tribes. CfIS scholars study across Bardprograms with a broad range of interests. CfIS will work closelywith Academic Advisor to fully support Indigenous Students. Bard College is also a founding member of the Higher EducationOpportunity Program (HEOP). HEOP is central to the college’songoing commitment to ensuring that a Bard education remainsaccessible, regardless of socioeconomic status. Over the last tenyears, the program has grown to support the development andacademic success of students coming to Bard on a variety ofopportunity-related scholarships such as the Early CollegeOpportunity Scholarship and the Posse Scholarship from the Atlanta& Puerto Rico programs. The scholars include low-income,Pell-eligible, and first-generation college students from diversebackgrounds. The successful candidate in this position will be someone who isstudent-oriented and has prior experience working directly withIndigenous students at post-secondary, undergraduate and/orgraduate levels and is able to offer personal, academic, and careeradvising in one-on-one setting, as well as in small groups. Thisposition reports to the Director of the Educational OpportunityPrograms and coordinates with the Center for Indigenous Studiesstaff, and is a full-time, salaried position withinStudent/Academic Affairs. Close collaboration is expected with other staff and offices andprograms across the College; including, but not limited to, theCenter for Indigenous Studies, Admissions, Student FinancialServices, the Learning Commons, the Dean of Student Affairs Office,Student Activities, Health and Counseling Services, the Office ofResidence Life and Housing, Athletics, and appropriate/relevantgraduate programs or affiliated centers. In addition, outreach tofaculty and key staff members is also expected as an importantmeans of effective intervention to help ensure the academic successof advisees. Key Responsibilities Provide holistic advising (academic, personal and socialsupport) in an educational setting to individuals and groups ofscholars and community members with a focus, but not only limitedto, the unique experiences of Indigenous/American Indianstudents Through regular meetings, assists students with exploringoptions, setting goals, and creating a plan to achieve desiredoutcomes Monitor academic progress of students to ensure success andassist with their post-graduation transition to work or graduateschool Guide advisees on scholarships and financial support availableto them, assisting them in navigating these processes, procedures,and ensuring comprehension of policies Assist advisees with personal and social support as needed toadjust to campus environment Explain institutional policies, course prerequisites, andensure registration and course adjustments occur in a timelymanner Provide grounded and fair feedback and advice, with an emphasison kind and respectful. culturally appropriate communication Assist with planning and implementing culturally-basedprogramming, events and workshops for the collaboration withFinancial Aid office Monitor students' success through ongoing outreach andadvising; make appropriate referrals and interventions Maintain confidential records and provide student informationon each assigned student for the required database. (Provideinformation for college, state, and federal reports) Assist in admissions and recruitment, including recruitmentstrategies, for Indigenous students and may be asked to participatein travel to communities, fairs, interviews to support thesefunctions. Supervise student advisee groups and affiliate groups, such asthe Indigenous Student Association, with culturally-competentmentorship Assume related administrative duties and responsibilities asassigned Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred but notrequired Experience working with American Indian communities in aneducational counseling or advising, mentorship, or teachingcontext, ideally with college and graduate students, staff andfaculty of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds,including those with different levels of academic preparation andvarying physical and/or learning abilities Lived experience in a reservation or urban Native communitycontext is a plus Demonstrated knowledge of outreach and retention strategiesthat meet the needs of college and graduate students from low-income and/or first-generation backgrounds Confidence and proficiency with computers Valid driver’s license required Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate withstudents, staff and faculty with both written and verbalskills Fluency in another language, particularly in Spanish, is aplus Compensation Compensation: $63,000 annually This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonableestimate of the compensation for the position at the time of thejob posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factorsincluding but not limited to market and organizationalconsiderations, experience, and qualifications of a selectedcandidate as well as internal and external equity.
