Physician (Anesthesiology)-Critical Care Intensivist

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount, up to $200 000, and the eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but not hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy) Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine Degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory or Commonwealth or in the District of Columbia Residency training: Completed a residency approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification; or one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice; or non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States where duties are related to the position Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, may only be appointed on an intermittent basis, and are not considered independent practitioners. Proficiency in spoken and written English Physical requirements: Ability to perform rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, assist with lifting patients, perform all pain procedures including interventional pain procedures, have adequate hearing (aid permitted), and possess emotional/mental stability Duties Evaluate, treat, and coordinate the care of critically ill perioperative patients in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). Serve a patient population of simple to highly complex patients with significant comorbidities awaiting or having undergone diverse surgical procedures. Identify and intervene on patients who deviate from the expected postoperative recovery trajectory. Perform routine invasive procedures common to critical care practice areas as necessary. Work with a multidisciplinary team within the SICU, requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills with consultants, Tele‑ICU, and surgical services. Maintain timely and effective communication with a variety of consultants as part of comprehensive care for patients with critical illness. Maintain a flexible work schedule with on‑call responsibilities. Compensation and Benefits Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.
