Machine Learning Research Scientist, Player Modeling

Salary: $100,000 - 100,000 per year Requirements:

• We are looking for a PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline; new graduates are welcome, or an MS with 2–3 years of industry experience as an Applied Scientist or ML Engineer.
• We need strong expertise in combinatorics, probability theory, and statistics, with proven ability in mathematical modeling for game design.
• We expect strong data intuition, including the ability to detect distribution shift and leakage, and to choose appropriate evaluation metrics.
• We require solid software engineering fundamentals, including version control, testing, reproducibility, and judgment on when a prototype should be elevated to production software.
• We need demonstrated capability to take a modeling problem from definition to a working solution independently.
• We expect experience with simulation and programming tools such as Python.
• We require fluency in Chinese and the ability to communicate complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• We develop models of player behavior, including engagement, monetization, retention, and anomaly detection, as well as the systems that influence them.
• We translate loosely defined product questions into modeling problems and choose suitable approaches across probabilistic and generative models, gradient boosting, reinforcement learning, bandits, and constrained optimization.
• We apply player lifetime value estimation and retention analysis to guide game features and design choices.
• We build and refine core mathematical models for slot machines and other games to achieve target RTP, hit frequency, and volatility.
• We design and validate random mechanics, bonus rounds, free spins, and jackpots through combinatorial reasoning and detailed probability analysis.
• We balance player engagement, regulatory compliance, and long-term profitability through inventive mathematical solutions.
• We work with large, imbalanced, real-world datasets, diagnosing data quality issues, distribution shift, and leakage while designing evaluations that reflect true performance.
• We perform large-scale simulations and data analyses in tools such as Python, MATLAB, R, or custom code to forecast game performance, validate models, and optimize retention.
• We develop quantitative indices that accurately describe game performance.
• We productionize models with clean, reproducible code and collaborate on deployment, monitoring, and inference constraints.
• We build and run ML pipelines on AWS, covering training, deployment, and monitoring of production models.
• We prepare mathematical models, simulation reports, and documentation for certification with global regulators such as GLI and BMM across North America, Europe, and Asia.
• We translate complex math and ML concepts into engaging gameplay and clear player-facing communication for technical and non-technical audiences.
• We play-test games in development, analyze live performance data, and maintain design documentation such as par sheets, pay tables, and control files.

We develop predictive and generative models of player behavior and the game systems that act on them, while also researching and optimizing the core mathematical models behind our games, particularly slot machines. You will join a fast-paced, on-site, consensus-driven environment in Irvine, CA, collaborating closely with game designers, product managers, and engineers to drive both research and product impact.
