Job Description Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III – Fleet Operations Division (2600341). Based in Childress, TX. Position Information TxDOT’s Fleet Operations Division is looking for an Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III. This role involves repair, maintenance, and inspection of fleet vehicles and equipment, including heavy construction machinery and related systems. Salary Ranges: Equipment Mechanic I: $50,000 - $61,130 Equipment Mechanic II: $50,000 - $71,055 Equipment Mechanic III: $55,000 - $81,351 This single posting covers all three levels; the level will be determined by experience, education, and skill level. Responsibilities Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts including air, anti‑locking, and hydraulic systems. Analyze and interpret data from computerized diagnostic equipment. Complete repair order paperwork and enter data into the fleet information system. Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction. Check lighting and wiring mechanisms for proper functioning. Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment. Conduct quality assurance analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. Prepare vehicles for use by ensuring safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios are present. Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems. Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and perform complex diagnostic work. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Level‑Specific Responsibilities Equipment Mechanic II adds: Training of less experienced technicians. Equipment Mechanic III adds: Leading and training less experienced technicians. Performing duties of the Shop Coordinator when absent. Travel to other district or division shops within the state is required as needed. Minimum Qualifications Experience Required: Equipment Mechanic I – 2 years diagnosing and repairing automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment. Equipment Mechanic II – 4 years diagnosing and repairing automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment. Equipment Mechanic III – 7 years diagnosing and repairing automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment. Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience. Certificates from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis. Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license. Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required; can be obtained within 120 calendar days of course registration. Two attempts are allowed to pass the written and driving exams. Preferred Qualifications Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Additional Competencies Equipment Mechanic I competences: Proficient use of hand and power tools. Proficient in mechanical repair of diesel, gasoline, CNG, and LPG engines. Diagnose problems and repair equipment, including electronic and mechanical components. Proficient in computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word). Read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics. Follow safety standards and practices. Effective communication. Knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmissions. Calibrate electronic and mechanical components. Brake repairs including antilocking, mechanical, air, and hydraulic systems. Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications. Equipment Mechanic II & III additional competencies: Extensive knowledge of mechanical equipment operation and maintenance. Expert brake repair skills. Expert troubleshooting and calibration of electronic and mechanical components. Coordinate labor, materials, and equipment. Read and interpret repair contracts and parts contracts. Expert diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications (III only). Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Exposure to extreme cold and heat (below 32°F or above 100°F for over an hour). Exposure to noise. Required protective gear: respirator, hard hat, or other device. Medium work lifts up to 50 lbs; frequently lifts up to 25 lbs. Kneeling or bending to work on knees. Job simulation and pre‑employment physical test. Drug test required; random testing for safety impact positions. No medical marijuana as legitimate medical explanation for positive test. Available for duty within 60 minutes on a 24‑hour basis during emergencies. Alternate schedules during emergency response. Travel to other district/division shops as needed.
