TITLE: HVAC Mechanic II (Heating & Air Conditioning Technician II)

PRIMARY FUNCTION :

Performs advanced and specialized skilled work in the construction, modification, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), chiller systems, and environmental control systems. Serves as a technical expert in complex HVAC applications and evaluates system performance to ensure optimal efficiency, safety, and operational reliability.

Performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and environmental control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and energy-efficient operation of school district facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Licensing/Certification:
• Valid North Carolina Driver's License
• EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification required
• Journeyman or higher HVAC License preferred
• Valid North Carolina Driver's License
• EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification required
• HVAC installation/maintenance certification preferred
• Valid North Carolina Driver's License

EDUCATION:

• High School Diploma required.
• Technical or trade school training in HVAC technology required.
• High School Diploma required.
• Technical or trade school training in HVAC technology required.

EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible HVAC experience required.
• Considerable experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC and related environmental control systems.
• Experience with Scroll and Screw type chillers, and large reciprocal compressors required.
• Experience analyzing building heating and cooling loads and recommending system modifications preferred.
• At least five (5) years of successful HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair experience preferred.
• Experience with commercial/institutional HVAC systems and Building Automation Systems (BAS) preferred.
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Troubleshoots and repairs complex chiller systems and advanced control problems.
• Analyzes HVAC system requirements and recommends new systems or modifications.
• Researches new HVAC equipment and procedures for district-wide implementation.
• Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams, and technical specifications.
• Constructs, modifies, and installs HVAC equipment and environmental control systems.
• Wires controls and related electrical components.
• Determines parts, materials, and work procedures for complex projects.
• Provides technical guidance and mentorship to HVAC Mechanic I personnel.
• Performs preventive maintenance on advanced HVAC and chiller systems.
• Ensures compliance with safety codes, district standards, and energy efficiency initiatives.
• Responds to emergency HVAC and chiller system failures as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Utilities Management or HVAC Foreman.
• Troubleshoots and repairs HVAC systems and electrical control circuits using appropriate test equipment.
• Diagnoses equipment malfunctions and determines proper repair procedures.
• Replaces faulty thermostats, wiring, motors, compressors, belts, and controls.
• Calibrates electrical, BAS and electronic control systems.
• Cleans, lubricates, and services ventilation and air conditioning equipment.
• Installs and sets HVAC equipment, ductwork, and piping.
• Wires controls and connects system components.
• Adjusts and balances air distribution systems for maximum energy efficiency.
• Utilizes refrigerant recycle and recovery equipment in compliance with EPA regulations.
• Maintains preventive maintenance schedules and accurate service records.
• Responds to emergency HVAC service calls as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Utilities Management and HVAC Foreman.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Considerable knowledge of heating, ventilation, and refrigeration theory.
• Considerable knowledge of HVAC practices, materials, and equipment.
• Working knowledge of electricity and advanced electrical diagnostics.
• Working knowledge of electrical components and digital control systems.
• Ability to analyze building heating and cooling requirements.
• Ability to follow and interpret blueprints and diagrams.
• Ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in deadline-driven environments.
• Working knowledge of ventilation and refrigeration theory.
• Working knowledge of electricity and HVAC troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of reciprocal compressors and pneumatic/DDC control systems.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical diagrams.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
• Skill in the use of HVAC tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions and work independently.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

REPORTS TO:

Director of Utilities Management

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds, carry up to 70 pounds, and push up to 100 pounds. Requires strength and dexterity to perform advanced mechanical tasks safely.

The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms, and must regularly lift and/or move up to 70 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Must be able to use hands and fingers for manual dexterity in an office environment. Other required abilities include close vision, the ability to adjust visual focus, and the ability to talk and hear.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Works indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and humidity. Exposure to mechanical rooms, rooftops, electrical systems, and high-noise environments.

The employee regularly works in indoor conditions and regularly works near a video display. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal to moderate. Daily contact is made with other employees and school personnel

Salary Grade: NC-09

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months

Employee may be exposed to electrical hazards, refrigerants, high-pressure systems, mechanical equipment, and varying environmental conditions. Must comply with OSHA safety regulations and district safety protocols.
