About the Position

Job Title: RN - MedSurg/Tele Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years Med/Tele RN experience License: RN License required Certifications: BLS required, BCR required, ACLS preferred, Medical-Surgical certification preferred Must-Have: - Strong clinical assessment and med-surg nursing skills - IV insertion and care - Central line management - Wound care and post-operative monitoring - Cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation - Ability to coordinate care with an interdisciplinary team - Patient education and discharge planning Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse specializing in Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing. The facility has 637 licensed beds. It is a Level 1 Trauma Designation facility and a teaching hospital. The unit has a total of 35 beds, with a patient census of 35. Patient types include those with acute or chronic diseases, post-operative patients, and co-morbidities common to the medical-surgical population, such as diabetes, hypertension, infections, congestive heart failure, and electrolyte imbalances. Patient ratios are 1:4-6 for RNs and LPNs, with 2-3 CNAs available per shift. Basic Life Support (BLS) is required for this position. Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) certification is also required, meaning the traveler must pass an EKG competency exam. ACLS certification is preferred but not required. National certification in Medical-Surgical nursing is preferred. Key skills required include tracheostomy care, chest tube management, peripheral IV starts, and management of insulin and heparin drips. You will be expected to work collaboratively with CNAs and unit secretaries. The role includes responsibilities for vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulating patients, and hourly rounding. There is a designated transport team to assist with patient transport. Resource nurses, discharge nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members will provide support. Telemetry monitoring and tech support are available 24/7. The electronic medical record system used is EPIC. IV pumps and other unit-specific equipment, such as vital sign monitors and glucose stat strips, will be utilized regularly. Float staff may be assigned to other adult medical-surgical and telemetry units within the facility. Candidates should be prepared for a busy work environment with a strong emphasis on teamwork.
