Workers' Compensation Attorney

Miller Johnson is seeking a Workers’ Compensation Attorney to join our Medical Recovery Practice Group in our Grand Rapids office. This is a unique opportunity to work on the healthcare provider side of workers’ compensation, representing healthcare systems in recovering and managing claims. Our team is looking to add a motivated attorney who is eager to take ownership of files and contribute immediately. Responsibilities Manage a high-volume caseload of workers’ compensation matters on behalf of healthcare providers Represent clients at hearings across West Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Okemos Counsel hospitals and healthcare systems on claim strategy, recovery, and compliance Communicate with insurance carriers and adjusters, including drafting requests for reconsideration relating to payment disputes Communicate regularly with insurance companies, third-party administrators, and client stakeholders Conduct legal research and prepare written analyses related to workers’ compensation issues Track and manage case activity, including maintaining organized records and utilizing basic data tools (e.g., Excel) Work collaboratively with attorneys and staff while maintaining ownership of assigned matters Qualifications J.D. from an accredited law school and admission (or eligibility for admission) to the Michigan Bar 1–5 years of legal experience preferred; workers’ compensation experience is a plus but not required Open to candidates with backgrounds in workers’ compensation, insurance defense, employment law, or general litigation Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills Ability to manage multiple matters in a fast-paced, high-volume environment Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel Strong work ethic with a proactive, “roll‑up‑your‑sleeves” mindset Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively with clients and external stakeholders Willingness to work in‑office in Grand Rapids At Miller Johnson, our culture is anchored in our Core Values and how we work together: Who We Are Integrity and Candor – We speak the truth Down to Earth – We stay humble and real Grit – We push through and get it done Committed to Excellence – We raise the bar Committed to Impact – We lift others up How We Work Entrepreneurial Mindset – We think like owners Down to Business – We move fast and stay practical Rooted and Invested – We build lasting trust We are committed to fostering an exceptional work experience that includes a healthy work‑life balance and an inclusive culture that values uniquely talented team members.
