Workers' Rights Program Legal Assistant

Title Workers’ Rights Program Legal Assistant Location Bakersfield, CA Employment Type Hourly (Non-Exempt) Salary $20.00 to $24.00 per hour, depending on experience. Overview The legal assistant supports the Supervising Attorney in protecting employee rights and providing representation of clients in labor rights matters. The role includes client intake, document management, correspondence, legal research, event coordination, and outreach. The position reports to the Supervising Attorney and works closely with the Chief Programs Officer. Responsibilities Conduct initial client intakes and evaluate eligibility. Perform legal research and gather additional information from clients. Provide administrative and legal support to attorney(s) and staff. Maintain accurate client database and case files (physical and electronic). Generate documents using computer hardware and software. Manage incoming legal mail, route to appropriate files, and collaborate with attorney(s) on responses. Compose routine and complex correspondence, including merge documents and graphics. Prepare outgoing mail, email, and fax correspondence. Coordinate special events and community outreach activities. Translate documents between Spanish and English. Provide information and resources to potential clients. File complaints and follow up on service of process. Answer and screen telephone calls, arrange conference calls. Schedule appointments for attorney(s) and manage appointment calendars for workshops. Assist office staff with administrative needs. Arrange travel schedules and reservations for attorney(s). Maintain file system and file correspondence. Greet visitors/clients and assist with questions and appointment needs. Coordinate meetings, prepare agendas, reserve facilities, and record minutes. Supervise office volunteers as needed. Minimum Requirements Working knowledge of employment law. Handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion. Develop, implement, and track day‑to‑day activities. Experience working with immigrant communities, communities of color, and low‑income and working‑class communities. Bilingual in English and Spanish (or other languages as needed). Ability to manage time and multi‑task effectively. Self‑motivated and able to work independently or with a team. Collaboration : work with teammates professionally and solution‑oriented. Dedication to Mission : genuine interest in immigrant and farm worker rights. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Effective communication with a range of individuals. Excellent problem‑solving skills. Experience managing and executing across several communication media. Flexibility, Speed, and Precision : adjust quickly to changing priorities with speed, precision, and accuracy. Language Skills – read, analyze, interpret business periodicals and technical procedures; write legal briefs, reports, and business correspondence; present information. Mathematical Skills – calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; apply basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability – solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization; interpret a variety of instructions. Preferred Requirements None. Education and/or Experience Associate degree or equivalent from a two‑year college or technical school; and two years or more of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid California Class C driver’s license; access to automobile and insurance; willingness to travel to off‑site locations. Typing speed of not less than 50 Net Words Per Minute (NWPM). Compensation The hourly pay range is $17.90 to $25.00, and benefits include: Accruals of 2, 3, and 4 vacation weeks per year depending on tenure. 16 paid holidays (includes a personal day). 1 mental health day per calendar year. Physical Demands Regularly required to sit; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl. Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work Environment Moderate noise level.
