Paramedic - 24 Hour Shift

Job Overview The Paramedic contributes to the comprehensive Countywide Fire Rescue and Emergency Services program. The role includes providing quality medical care in emergencies, natural disasters, hazardous situations, environmental emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, and other life‑and‑death situations. Responsibilities Drive and operate county vehicles or equipment while obeying safety policies and roadway rules. Respond to emergency calls, read maps, and use the most expeditious route. Evaluate the scene on arrival, determine the nature and extent of illness or injury, take pulse, blood pressure, and visually observe changes in skin color, and interpret diagnostic signs. Establish priority for emergency care and initiate basic life support procedures as needed. Provide re‑hydration, rehabilitation, and medical treatment to victims, firefighters, and other personnel at the scene. Render appropriate emergency care based on competency level to stabilize patients, including CPR, spinal immobilization, oxygen delivery, triage, and administration of intravenous medications or fluid replacement as directed by a physician. Use medical equipment based on competency level, including cardiac monitor, defibrillator, perform endotracheal intubation, and use adjunct airways under physician direction. Follow infection disease protocol and practice proper disposal of biohazard waste. Reassure patients and bystanders, avoid mishandling, and search for medical identification emblem to aid care. Radio dispatcher for additional assistance, request or provide flight rescue service if required, and provide emergency care while following established protocols. Comply with regulations in handling deceased, notify authorities, and arrange for protection of property and evidence at the scene. Determine appropriate transport facility, report patient condition, and consult hospital physician or emergency department. Observe patients en‑route, administer care as directed, and communicate diagnostic findings to the facility. Report verbally and in writing about patient care at the scene and en‑route, assist emergency staff as required, and document all activity. Assist in lifting, carrying, and transporting patients to ambulance and medical facility. Prepare for and testify in courtroom hearings and judicial proceedings as required. Prepare, decontaminate, inspect, inventory, repair, and maintain medical equipment, supplies, and vehicles; test equipment regularly and ensure readiness. Communicate effectively over two‑way radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications. Respond accurately and timely to public, patient, fire, law enforcement, medical personnel, various agencies, employees, officials, supervisors, or other individuals' questions, complaints, or requests for assistance. Inventory and restock ambulance and station supplies and equipment, order and maintain adequate supplies for daily tasks. Maintain current field manuals, policies, procedures, employee handbooks, maps, addresses, and related material; read medical journals and other professional literature; maintain professional affiliations. Attend shift meetings and in‑service training to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations, improve job performance, and stay current with changing emergency medicine techniques, state/local policies, procedures, codes, and laws. Prepare and/or receive forms, logs, requests, reports, correspondence, and other documents; review, complete, process, approve, forward, maintain, or take other appropriate actions; maintain files and records. Cooperate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and representatives during investigations within county jurisdiction. Operate a personal computer, printer, calculator, copy and facsimile machines, telephone, radio, or other equipment necessary to complete essential functions, including word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software. Protect the privacy of all patient information in accordance with County privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal and state law and professional standards. Access protected health information only as necessary; share information only with those who have a need‑to‑know for treatment, payment, or other County operations. Report any concerns regarding County policies and procedures on patient privacy without threat of retaliation to the designated Officer. Other Essential Functions Perform tasks associated with specialized training such as crewing for air transport, and other duties as assigned. Assist with community events, offering free blood pressure readings, educating children and the public on the 911 emergency system, medical emergency procedures, and CPR. Perform miscellaneous duties and administrative tasks, including station cleaning, general housekeeping, scheduling maintenance, answering telephone, taking messages, and basic grounds maintenance. Maintain cleanliness of and fuel vehicles, check tire inflation, fluid levels, and schedule services or repairs as needed. Educate the community on emergency medical procedures. Perform other duties as required. Education, Training, and Experience High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment. Certificates and License Valid Florida Driver License or obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida. Clear/Active State of Florida Paramedic license. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC). Certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses within 90 days: IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS) IS-200.b: ISC for Single Resources & Initial Action Incidents IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System IS-800.c: National Response Framework, an Introduction Skills and Abilities Maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups, and the public. Communicate effectively orally and in writing; prepare written reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Exercise sound judgment and discretion in decision making and all phases of responsibilities, especially when handling confidential and protected health information. Available to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Strong working knowledge of computers and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Physical Requirements/Work Environment Combination of sitting, standing, and walking. Frequent lifting and carrying up to and more than 50 pounds. Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, balancing, throwing, twisting, and reaching above shoulders, occasionally crawling and climbing. Simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, typing, operating foot controls, driving automotive equipment, and occasional work in darkness. Normal visual acuity, field of vision, depth perception, color vision, hearing, and speaking. Risk exposure to adverse weather, moving machinery, fumes and gases, electrical hazards, and extreme noise.
