Registered Nurse II Emergency Department - Spring ECC

Overview At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The RN II delivers direct patient care effectively and efficiently for patients with varied and complex needs. This role communicates and collaborates with physicians and interprofessional health‑care team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and meet desired treatment outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights. The RN II assumes leadership roles with progressive responsibility, including leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and possibly contributing to service line or hospital‑wide initiatives in partnership with management. Employment Status FLSA Status: Non-exempt Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Nursing or graduate of an approved nursing education program. Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment. Licenses and Certifications Required RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing, PSV Compact Licensure – must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency). BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA). ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA). PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA). NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA). NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI). Preferred Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification. ENPC – Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification (ENA). TNCC – Trauma Nursing Core Course or Instructor (ENA). Skills and Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as defined by orientation and competency checklists. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English required for essential functions. Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers with a customer‑service focus. Strong assessment, organizational and problem‑solving skills to prioritize multiple tasks. Ability to work independently and exercise judgment in interactions with team and patients. Use of critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously per the Nurse Practice Act. Proficient time‑management skills. Maintains professional contributions per Clinical Career Path program guide. Working knowledge of Microsoft products, including Outlook. Essential Functions People Use therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and health‑care team. Contribute to teamwork by being aware of unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding to requests; foster healthy workplace relationships. Implement staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coach and mentor staff and students; may include pre‑ceptorship. Use peer‑to‑peer accountability to improve department retention/engagement score. Service Follow patient- and family-centered care standards and conduct nursing assessments, exams, treatment, and documentation. Develop, update, and communicate plan of care, including discharge, in partnership with patient, family, and team; prioritize based on needs and preferences; advocate to resolve clinical and ethical concerns. Provide patient teaching, evaluate comprehension, adapt methods accordingly; plan post‑discharge care. Help drive improvement of patient satisfaction score via peer accountability. Quality & Safety Follow standards of care defined by Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Adhere to regulatory requirements and professional practice; identify areas for improvement with evidence to achieve core measures and safety outcomes. Provide and modify care for complex patients; coordinate with interprofessional team based on evaluation and documentation. Improve quality and safety scores via accountability, near‑miss reporting, and collaboration. Finance Manage time, document care promptly, minimize overtime, prioritize tasks; input into unit resource utilization and budgeting. Help meet department financial targets through reducing length of stay and optimizing efficiency. Growth & Innovation Identify and present innovative, evidence-based solutions to improve patient care or unit operations; lead projects and shared governance activities. Champion new care pathways or service line implementation; identify trends for improvement; present options to governance and leadership.
