Curriculum Support Officer

Curriculum Support Officer Greenshaw High School, an over‑subscribed 11‑to‑18 mixed comprehensive secondary school in Sutton, South West London, is offering an exciting opportunity to join the Curriculum Support Department. The role is integral to classroom experience and involves supporting teaching staff across the school. Responsibilities Supervise whole classes during the short‑term absence of teachers within the assigned department(s) and, where additional cover is required, across the rest of the school. Follow the teacher’s instructions for the lesson, maintaining good order and keeping students on task. Support students to stay on task in a supportive but well‑disciplined environment, complying with the school’s policies and procedures. Be aware of any special needs of students within the class and respond accordingly, encouraging all students to do their best. Provide objective and accurate feedback to the class teacher on the conduct of the lesson and the response of the class. Support teachers and students in classes taken by a qualified teacher, as required by the department. Supervise groups of students in extra‑curricular activities, detention, study or homework clubs, where required. Provide general administrative and clerical support for the department, such as carrying out research, preparing and mounting displays, routine marking not requiring specialist knowledge, and contacting outside agencies and parents on straightforward matters. Ensure the department area is tidy and well‑presented. Undertake break, lunchtime or examination supervision, as required. Keep up to date with the role’s requirements by attending appropriate INSET and meetings, and staying abreast of changes in legislation. Comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, equal opportunities, race equality, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person. Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post as may be required by the Headteacher. Essential Qualifications and Skills Educated to at least A‑level standard (or equivalent). Educated to at least GCSE grade C standard (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics. Willingness to undertake ongoing training. Practical experience of word processing, Excel, e‑mail and other office electronic applications. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate professionally with colleagues, students, parents and visitors. High standard of literacy and numeracy. Excellent organisational skills, efficient, accurate and with excellent attention to detail. Ability to work flexibly to support others and respond to unplanned situations. Ability to work independently and show initiative. Ability to work under pressure, prioritise, multi‑task and meet strict timelines. Excellent ICT skills (e.g. Word, Excel). Ability to engage and motivate students, including those who may present a challenging manner, while remaining professional when facing emotive and distressing difficulties. Ability to work constructively as part of a team and build good relationships with colleagues. Knowledge and understanding of the education sector, with a desire to work in a comprehensive school and contribute to various aspects of school life. Desire to work with young people and support their education and achievements. Commitment to improving the life chances of young people and to providing high standards of service delivery. Sensitivity to the range of needs and difficulties that young people experience. Able to appropriately deal with confidential information. Desire to enhance and develop skills and knowledge through CPD. Demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding and the highest standards of child protection. Recognition of the importance of personal responsibility for health and safety. Commitment to the school’s ethos, aims and its whole community. Desirable Educated to degree level. Previous experience of working in an educational setting, ideally a secondary school. Previous experience of working successfully as part of a team.
