Job SummaryProvides public safety services through performance of functions, activities, and tasks not exclusively reserved for sworn peace officers in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Georgia Southern University Division of Public Safety. Augments law enforcement, emergency management, and fire / life safety personnel through logistical, technical, and administrative field support. This position involves shift work based on the needs of Georgia Southern University and the Division of Public Safety. Employees must have the ability to work flexible shift hours and schedules that include weekends, holidays, and evenings. Employees may be required to remain on duty beyond a normal shift and must be available to report for duty without prior notice due to on-call status, special events, emergencies, or personnel shortages.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. A CSA is an individual who, by virtue of their responsibilities, is designated to receive and obligated to report criminal incidents to the institution's Clery Coordinator for publication in the Annual Security Report.
Responsibilities- Augments law enforcement, emergency management, and fire / life safety personnel through performance of non-sworn public safety functions and tasks as assigned
- Provides logistical, technical, and administrative support to sworn law enforcement personnel and other first responders
- Performs duties as a basic communications officer when assigned to dispatch to include receiving, monitoring, and dispatching radio and telephone communications traffic for emergency and non-emergency situations
- Engages in visible safety / security patrol functions on foot and in vehicles to render service or aid, to ensure the security of persons and property, and to support the maintenance of public order
- Responds to and documents non-enforcement calls for service to include but not limited to general complaints, safety escorts, fire alarms, mislaid / recovered property, suspicious circumstances, injured person calls, and hazardous / unsafe conditions
- Performs functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters to include directing traffic, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging and evacuating people from dangerous situations and / or areas
- Performs emergency safety equipment inspections and assists with fire drills
- Fulfills annual professional development/training requirements as prescribed by the Georgia P.O.S.T. Council, Georgia Southern University, and the Division of Public Safety
- Promotes positive campus relations through delivery of public safety programming and active involvement in campus events
Educational Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
Required Experience
- One (1) or more years of law enforcement, public safety, or related experience
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Possession of Georgia P.O.S.T. Basic Communications Officer certification

This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.

- Basic knowledge of safety / security functions to include emergency communications, incident command, target hardening, patrol and observation, first-aid, CPR, AED deployment, crisis
- intervention, de-escalation, conflict resolution, and traffic control, to include applicable policies, procedures, and regulations
- Knowledge of university properties, population, and traffic control issues
SKILLS
- Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and human relations skills
- Skill in the delivery of public presentations on public safety related topics
