Job Summary The Division of Hospital Medicine is one of thirteen divisions within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and is a nationally recognized academic hospital medicine program. The division includes more than 120 instructional, clinical, and research track faculty who oversee more than 50% of the Department's inpatient clinical activity, including the 40-bed Medical Short Stay Units, Medicine Procedure Service, affiliate clinical programs, and a growing portfolio of sponsored research. Division faculty care for more than 16,000 inpatient and observation patients annually while advancing nationally recognized programs in health services research, patient safety, antimicrobial stewardship, medical decision-making, and medical education. Many faculty also serve in leadership roles across Michigan Medicine, the Medical School, and the VA Health System. The Department of Internal Medicine is seeking a Division Administrator to serve as the primary strategic and operational partner to the Division Chief. Together, they provide leadership for a dynamic academic division dedicated to excellence in clinical care, research, education, and faculty affairs. The Division Administrator provides executive leadership for the division's administrative, financial, operational, research, and human resource strategies while ensuring alignment with departmental, Medical School, and health system priorities. This individual is expected to anticipate challenges, develop innovative solutions, build high-performing teams, and translate strategic priorities into operational execution. Working collaboratively with faculty leaders, departmental leadership, and institutional partners, the Division Administrator fosters a culture of accountability, transparency, continuous improvement, and operational excellence. Responsibilities Clinical Operations & Performance Provide executive oversight of the division's clinical operations, ensuring efficient, high-quality care delivery across all inpatient, observation, and affiliate clinical programs. Partner with hospital, ambulatory, nursing, and operational leaders to improve patient access, throughput, quality, and operational performance. Monitor key clinical performance indicators, including productivity, access, quality, staffing, patient volumes, and financial performance, and develop action plans to address opportunities. Use operational and financial data to identify trends, recommend improvements, and support strategic decision-making. Evaluate clinical program growth opportunities and partner with division leadership to develop business plans for new services and initiatives. Ensure operational readiness for new programs, facilities, and institutional initiatives. Partner with quality and safety leaders to advance continuous improvement, Lean initiatives, regulatory compliance, and patient experience. Oversee revenue cycle performance and partner with clinical leaders to optimize documentation, coding, billing, and charge capture. Collaborate with departmental and health system leaders to align divisional clinical operations with broader institutional priorities Human Resources & Faculty Affairs Partner with the Chief on faculty recruitment, retention, onboarding, and succession planning. Conduct rigorous business analyses before initiating faculty recruitment, including assessment of mission need, financial sustainability, downstream revenue, and alignment with strategic priorities. Build and develop a high-performing administrative leadership team. Lead performance management, organizational development, and employee engagement. Support promotions, evaluations, compensation programs, and faculty development. Financial Stewardship Lead the division's financial strategy and long-range planning. Provide forward-looking financial analyses to support strategic decision-making. Align staffing, facilities, and investments with divisional priorities. Ensure strong internal controls and regulatory compliance. Partner with departmental leadership to identify growth opportunities. Leadership & Strategy Serve as the primary strategic partner to the Division Chief by anticipating needs, providing data-driven recommendations, and executing shared priorities. Partner with the Chief to develop and sustain effective faculty leadership structures across the clinical, research, education, and administrative missions. Align divisional priorities with Department of Internal Medicine, Medical School, and Michigan Medicine strategic initiatives. Balance long-term strategy with operational execution. Represent the division in departmental and institutional leadership forums. Research Administration Provide executive oversight of the division's research administration, ensuring efficient and compliant pre-award and post-award operations that support the division's growing research portfolio. Partner with faculty and research administrators to identify opportunities for research growth and ensure the infrastructure, staffing, and financial models are in place to support new initiatives. Oversee grant administration, including proposal development, award management, financial reconciliation, reporting, and sponsor compliance. Monitor faculty effort and ensure compliance with sponsor, Medical School, and institutional policies. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Business, Health Administration, or related field preferred. Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in academic healthcare or complex medical environments. Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, operations management, financial oversight, and process improvement. Proven success in building effective partnerships with physician leaders, hospital/ambulatory executives, and multidisciplinary teams. Strong leadership skills, including team development, conflict resolution, and organizational change management. Experience supporting high-complexity clinical operations, particularly inpatient, procedural, or subspecialty ambulatory services. Knowledge of academic medicine, research administration, and faculty affairs processes strongly preferred. Ability to manage competing priorities, develop system-wide efficiencies, and support diverse stakeholder needs across two distinct divisions. Why Join Michigan Medicine?
