Assistant or Associate Professor in Department of Chronic Disease Epidemiology

Position Description The Department of Chronic Disease Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at Yale University (YSPH) is seeking applicants at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Tenure or Educator Scholar Tracks. We are particularly interested in applicants with demonstrated records of conducting cutting-edge and community engaged research using epidemiologic methods to address the leading chronic disease causes of death and disability at a national or global level. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: development and application of novel epidemiologic methods (including in causal inference, data science and AI and measurement), mental health, substance use disorders, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and women’s health. We also welcome candidates who investigate the role that social and structural determinants play in shaping chronic disease epidemics and the intersection across multiple chronic diseases and employ research strategies to address these issues across the lifecourse. As one of the first schools of public health in the nation, YSPH has a rich history of being at the forefront of innovative research and education. Responsibilities Develop and maintain an active, externally funded, independent research program focused on addressing major chronic disease causes of death and disability. Apply highly rigorous epidemiologic methods, including in relation to measurement, causal inference, the application of data science and AI, and the creation of novel data sources for epidemiologic research. Publish and present research results in peer-reviewed professional journals and disseminate findings to scientific, clinical, policy, and community audiences. Contribute to the growth and impact of the educational mission, including through student recruitment, curriculum innovation, teaching at least one course at the masters/doctoral level each year and mentoring students. Foster collaborations and strengthen interactions with other schools across campus. Provide service to the department, school, and university in alignment with the YSPH Strategic Plan and Yale University priorities. Qualifications Applicants should have a doctoral degree in epidemiology or a related field. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated capacity to work both collaboratively and independently. Prior record of independent funding and high-impact publications. About the Department of Chronic Disease Epidemiology The Department currently has 17 faculty whose research fields include cancer, cardiovascular disease, perinatal and maternal child health, nutrition, exercise and obesity, global health, aging, genetic epidemiology, injury, substance use, and health disparities. The department faculty serve as principal investigators of approximately $9M of extramurally funded research annually, lead several T32s, and work across the full spectrum of translational research. The department has vibrant educational programs at both the MPH and PhD level with a focus on research and leadership in the field. Approximately 75 masters and 12 PhD students are enrolled in CDE each year. The MPH graduates go on to a variety of careers in epidemiology and public health leadership in the application of science to the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. The PhD program counts among its alumnus faculty and leadership at YSPH and peer schools of public health, leadership roles at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and State Departments of Health.
