Pay Grade: Teacher Salary Scale ($50500.00 to $113379.00)

Work Calendar: 10 month (200 Day)

FLSA Status: Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the Principal the Teacher develops and implements an instructional program focused on mental health careers behavioral health ethics and patient care to effectively meet the needs of all students. The Teacher assesses student performance and modifies instructional activities to ensure mastery of the VDOE Mental Health Assisting curriculum.

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Support Student Learning

• Curriculum Delivery: Adapt and adjust the instructional presentation of mental health concepts including psychology basics crisis intervention and rehabilitative care to meet student interests.
• Lesson Planning: Maintain an organized program of instruction based on effective long-range plans specifically for the Mental Health Assisting Careers course.
• Instructional Variety: Utilize a variety of materials such as case studies clinical simulations and industry-standard resources.
• Progress Monitoring: Maintain an effective system of monitoring student progress toward industry certifications and inform appropriate persons of such progress.

School Building & Professional Responsibilities

• Safety & Environment: Assume responsibility for a neat safe and confidential learning environment appropriate for sensitive mental health discussions.
• Professional Growth: Engage in ongoing professional development relevant to mental health behavioral science and Career and Technical Education (CTE).
• Collaboration: Work in close harmony with the CTE department and school counseling staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Degree : Bachelors degree Masters degree or education related to Psychology Social Work Nursing or Mental Health Services.
• Licensure: Hold or be eligible for a valid Commonwealth of Virginia teaching license with a specific endorsement in Health and Medical Sciences or Technical Education as required for course 14002.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of mental health career pathways therapeutic communication and classroom management strategies.
• Skills: Ability to relate positively to parents community mental health partners and clinical site representatives.
• Abilities: Work cooperatively in a team environment to meet departmental goals and meet deadlines for student certification reporting.

WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Environment: Inside a classroom/lab setting with moderate noise.
• Physical Demands: Light work requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force; standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
• Mental Demands: Must demonstrate logic and rational thinking especially when addressing sensitive student topics or behavioral health simulations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Degree: Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in a health care program of study.
• Professional Licensure: Must hold or be eligible for a valid teaching license which meets Commonwealth of Virginia requirements. Candidates must hold a current license or certification as a professional practitioner in one of the following areas:
• Medical Assistant
• Practical Nursing (LPN) or Registered Nursing (RN)
• Nurse Aide
• Health and Medical Sciences (with relevant specialty)
• Occupational Experience: At least two years of successful full-time occupational experience (or the equivalent) within the past five years in a related mental health or medical field is required.
• Industry Certification: Per Virginia Code candidates seeking an initial CTE license must have an industry certification credential in the area in which they seek endorsement.
